has composed for orchestras, film, television, ensembles, stage, theater, ballet and dance, including music for such companies as The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, The Royal Danish Ballet, Diavolo, The Atlanta Ballet, The Ohio Ballet, Ririe Woodbury Dance Company, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, The Geva Theater of New York, Ballet de Monterey of Mexico and Folklorico del Pacifico. Zeretzke’s score for the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago was featured in Robert Altman’s docu-drama “The Company”. The Chicago Times called it, "an instant classic!”

Zeretzke''s scores have been performed live at the Aspen Music Festival, Madison Square Garden, Rockefeller Center, The Music Center Of Los Angeles, The Getty Center, Peabody Conservatory of Music, Disney Hall and with the United States Marine Band Percussion Ensemble in Washington D.C.
Zeretzke was Music Director and soloist with the prestigious Aman Folk Ensemble in Los Angeles for over thirteen years.

Zeretzke created, and is currently director of, The Goin’ South Band (Southern Americana), Ancient Grooves (World Music Ensemble) and the Salaam Ensemble (Music of the Near and Middle East). These ensembles include some of the most well known musicians from around the world and represent an unprecedented consortium of exceptional talent, all brought together in these unique ensembles created and directed by Zeretzke.

In 2000, Zeretzke won first place for the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur International Composing Competition for Dance in Quebec, Canada. He was awarded the Lester Horton Dance Award for outstanding achievement in music for dance in Los Angeles, California.

Zeretzke is well known for pioneering his ‘Tribal Symphonic’ sound in his unique, exotic orchestral compositions and recordings, using both World percussion and instrumentation with Western classical music.

Zeretzke’s movie scores include work for Paramount Pictures, Disney, Kushner-Locke Productions and for Discovery Channel. His soundtrack and recorded works and performances include music for Sleepy Hollow, Cold Sassy Tree, AmericaEast, Streetfighter, Mortal Combat, Delta of Venus, Subspecies, Matlock, Solomon and Sheba, and Adventures With Jules Sylvester. He has recorded with artists Michele Polnareff, Liana Foly, Angelique Kidjo and Kenny Loggins.

In 2000 Zeretzke was an honored recipient of the P.A.S.A. Award, (Professional Artist’s in the Schools), a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in arts education in California. He is associated with numerous educational organizations, including the Music Center of Los Angeles County, The California Arts and Literature Projects, The Orange County Performing Arts Center, The Gale Institute, The California Leadership Academy and the National Endowment for the Arts.

He performs for thousands of students every year in educational programs he has directed and developed for schools in California and across the nation.


Zeretzke continues to work with The American Red Cross, The American Cancer Society and The Ronald McDonald House for kids fighting cancer. His passion for helping youth has taken him to different states to bring his knowledge of World Music and his own personal inspiration to thousands of students across the country.

John lives in the beautiful arts community and city of Ojai, in southern California.
