For two hours each week, I have the privilege of enjoying an inspired collection of jazz selected by Mike Laatz for his Fine Music Radio programme – and now there’s “Sentimental Journey”, an hour-and-a-quarter of inspired playing by Laatz. From a sultry “Misty” to a jump-bop “Summer Samba” it’s a smoky ride, with the 4am paean of “Ntyilo Ntyilo” a highlight – and the mashed ‘taters original is a rollicking inclusion.

It’s been a privilege to work with the wonderful musicians on this album. Andrew, Basil and Kevin are, in my book, the finest rhythm section in the country.
