Music in its truest form conveys the expression and emotion of its creator. It is with this belief that I have endeavored to capture the essence of my feelings, personal experiences, and love of song to share with others. Each original work is like a snapshot from the photo album of my life.
Sometimes life is not what we expect; delivering both exquisite joy and cutting pain. Most of us tend to bury our wounds, embarrassed that we have received them, but eventually there comes a time to face the truth and fight for our recovery. When that happens there is nothing to hide, nothing to be ashamed of and everything to hope and live for.
I have discovered that through my pain there was a purpose to be found, a power to be unleashed and a passion to be shared with others that have been hurt by the arrows of physical, mental and sexual abuse.
WHO IS CRISCELDA PEREZ?
My personal story is, in fact, an incredible journey, about a young Mexican girl who has overcome horrendous trials and misfortunes. Out of my personal hurts and struggles, a compilation of songs arose which I collectively entitled "the opposite of mask music". I felt that the popular music at the time upheld singers and musicians whose songs and marketed image lacked emotional depth and were not entirely honest - but a mask. In contrast, my music is the opposite of that, exposing all of my flaws, struggles and aspirations. The CD cover picture tells the hidden story in itself. A girl covered in mud with light in her face and darkness behind her. Her rough clothing gives clues to the saddening and tragic environment in which she used to live. The mud covering her body is the residue of uncaring, unfeeling people that have dirtied her. But look at her face - the light is shining on it. She is leaving the darkness and entering the light.
The songs within are bare and honest songs about parental abandonment, deep-seated insecurity and the horror of incest. These are issues and demons which silently plague many people today. I am not the only one that has endured these crippling experiences. The very core of my performance is to minister to these innocent victims. I am just one voice among many; the voice that breaks the silence and speaks of hope. I am Criscelda Perez.
WHAT IS YOUR MUSICAL STYLE?
Good question. Many have attempted to place my style into a neat descriptive box only to find that its uniqueness defies traditional definition. My musical style is purely emotional. In constructing my songs the question held in mind is - What does this feeling sound like? Because of this it is very hard to place a label on my style. One cannot say, "It is pop, or rock, or jazz," although some have stretched to compare me to Tori Amos. In all truth it is simply the feelings of a unique girl expressed through the language of music.
PERSONAL BIO:
Criscelda Perez was born in Stuttgart, Germany and raised in a family of six, the daughter of a military staff sergeant stationed abroad. She returned to the States at the age of five and graduated from Comstock High School in Comstock, Michigan. Her musical background includes five years of piano, five years of voice, and one year of musical school for opera and classical voice. She and her husband, Jesse Mortimore, reside in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
