Urban Diversions is Neil Currie’s first album of jazz compositions. His Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra (Tumbling Strain) was nominated for a JUNO award for Outstanding Classical Composition in 2007. It appears on the 2005 CD Passionscape, dedicated to his orchestral compositions and performed by the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra. A student of Peter Sculthorpe, he was commissioned by Londoner John Williams to write a concerto for guitar, which Williams recorded in Australia with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in 1990. Filipino president Cory Aquino’s praise of Currie’s composition Ortigas Avenue first brought attention to his work in Sydney in 1986. Cuts from Urban Diversions may be heard on seriousjazz radio in Miami and skyjazz in Oshawa, Ontario.
