Details:
Hello, I’m Katie Drake. I was born on June 5, 1982 in Chico, CA. When I was 7 my family moved to a farm just outside of town, and that’s where I spent the rest of my growing up years. I loved living on a farm, especially during the month of October when my family had a huge pumpkin patch. I was a daddy’s girl and I loved following my dad around on the farm, learning to drive tractor, shooting targets and fishing along the creek.

What I’ve always loved doing the most though is singing. I started singing at church when I was about 7 and loved every chance I had to sing for people. I took four years of piano lessons but never was good enough to sing along with my playing, which frustrated me. When I was in high school I learned how to play the trombone so I could go to Disneyland with the band. However, I obviously couldn’t sing along with that either.

When I was a junior in high school, my Young Life leader taught me a few lessons on the guitar and I was hooked. I quickly got good enough to sing along with my playing and I was delighted to have an instrument I could take anywhere with me and sing. I started by learning basic worship songs, and began helping lead music at Young Life clubs in high school. By the time I was a sophomore in college I was leading worship at our church.

Although I always knew I loved singing, I had never tried writing my own songs. I never really liked poetry in school, so I imagined I’d never be very good at writing songs. However one day I decided to give it a try and I wrote a simple worship song. It was an amazing feeling, and I knew then that I had found my new passion. Although I was still unconfident in my songwriting skills, I slowly started writing more. The second song I wrote was “Bless this Man”, a love song to my husband which we danced to on our wedding day. I had written the song as a surprise for Brian and I had it recorded (because I knew I’d never make it through without crying my eyes out!) and when it came on during our first dance he was shocked. I also wrote a song for my dad, which we danced to for our father daughter dance. Surprising both of them with those songs was the most special memory I have from that day.

I really feel like each song I have written has been an incredible gift from God. I’m still amazed every time I finish a song, because I know that without God’s help, I wouldn’t have written a single one. My constant prayer is that each song I write be God breathed and inspired, because if God can use me to touch people through my voice and my songs, then I never want to stop singing.
