It was a small wooden house on the East coast island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean that three friends first sat together and jammed out a few obscure chords. In those days the common interest was surfing, the music was just a stay-and-lime (hangout) thing before everyone eventually got around to going home. The surfing never died, the music just got more organized, from an afterthought to a reason to get together. The year was 1992.
For three years they stuck at it with no drummer. Then
one night, the bass player arrived with a big dude named "Fats". No-one dared comment...He came, he drummed, he conqured. All the while Joan sat quietly next door trying to ignore the barrage of sounds. That night a band was born. Finally the baptismal gig came and with it an obvious name - Disturbing Joan.
Their first paying gig was a 1 hour spot at a local beach bar. They got $150 and the lead singer forgot his words for the opening song. With the rhythm guitarist playing "phantom" guitar, the rest went by in a blur, but somehow they earned a loyal following.
Six years, 4 backup singers, 1 bass player, 1 keyboardist several drummers and God knows how many flat tires later, Disturbing Joan would find themselves opening for Malcolm Jamal Warner''s band at the 2001 St. Lucia Jazz Festival as part of Jazz on the Square. The band was not sure how the crowd would react to the blend of rock and reggae that is their trademark sound. The smiles in the crowd put all at ease. Disturbing Joan had really arrived on the music scene.
In 1999 the group hunkered down and began working on their debut album, Bush Tea. The recording would drag on for 3 long years as they tried to balance the rigors of giging and finding a drummer and a keyboardist to replace Fats and Shesh respectively - both now with a cruise ship band. Their tracks would be put down whenever they were off the ship. Every one else would fill in their parts in between. Towards the end some tracks were completely scrapped and redone live to ensure the feel was properly captured. The hard work paid off. The folks at Discmasters in Illinois where the album was mastered and printed were suitably impressed to offer to send the cd onto a major label for review.
With the first album finally finished the band now turns their attention to writing new material. The creativity, created by the chemistry, is the magic oil that runs the Joan machine. The inevitable dry spells fade away whenever the band surfaces for a gig. And when all the cylinders are firing, Disturbing Joan puts on a smoker of a show. The recent opener they did for reggae superstars Barrington Levy and Third World left the crowd wanting more (and wondering if the band was really St. Lucian).
A new single and video "Inner Creature" has been released from heir upcomming album as the band gets ready to perform at St Lucia Jazz 2005.
Whether the audience is 4 or 4,000, Disturbing Joan is happy to play and given the quality of music these guys produce, the possibilities are infinite.
