MP3 Dante's Bop - Somewhere Down The Road

A mix of that Memphis sound from the late 50''s and 60''s (think Elvis, Johnny Cash, Dusty Springfield, Carl Perkins), mixed in with some swing, jazz influences for a tasty bit of Americana.

Somewhere Down The Road Liner Notes

Sun Studio’s in Memphis, Tennessee. This is the place where Elvis got started. So did Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Howling Wolf, and many others. Some have said that all roads lead to Memphis, and in the case of much of our popular music, I would have to say that this is true. So in the Summer of 2005 we took our own journey to the place where so much of the legacy of popular American music began..

We started on this road with the idea of writing and recording songs in the style of the great music icons who first made their mark at Sun Studio. Simple songs, simple melodies, just four musicians sitting in a room and playing music. No overdubbing, no fancy electronic tricks, just music pure and simple. The end product of this effort was our 3rd album, “Brand New Day – Sun Sessions”, released in Winter of 2005.

The start of 2006 brought us to the next leg of our journey. For this project, we wanted to take the music a step further. The songwriting would still remain in the tradition of Americana. But we would add some embellishments. Backing vocals, percussion, piano, organ, and acoustic guitar were added tastefully. Their purpose being to add to the basic song, not hide it in layers of overdubs. As for the songwriting, we let some of the blues and gospel feel of Memphis music work its way into the songs. The idea was to take the next logical step in keeping with the Memphis tradition.

The album was recorded in October of 2006 over four evenings. Walking into Sun Studio is not unlike walking into church. We all approached this project with the proper mix of humility, respect, and determination. A full moon was shining as we worked into the night to create the sounds you will hear on this album. The songs reflect our take on the kind of music that was recorded here in Memphis in the late 50’s and 60’s. Country, Blues, Gospel, with a little Rock and Roll mixed in. When the sessions were over, we felt that we had accomplished what we had set out to do.

We hope that you will enjoy listening to this album and that you will find something satisfying and uplifting in the songs contained here. As for us, we are now planning our next trip back to Memphis. We are not yet certain as to the exact nature of this next outing. Only that it will be a return to a special place and time in American music.

Respectfully,

Jerome Unger, Dante’s Bop
