How and when did you guys get together?

Basically the band has been around in some permutation since 2003. Due to changes in musical direction and line-up there has never really been an album until now. The album was started in late 2005 with the line-up of Rick McNerny (Vocals, Guitar), Jeremy Papay (Drums), Josh Lucas (Guitar), and Stephen Palko (Bass). Rick and Stephen have been playing in bands together since meeting at Greater Latrobe High School in 1993. The two then continued on to Duquesne University’s School of Music in 1996. At that same time, Stephen played bass in a side project with Josh. Jeremy played in various groups through out this time while also attending Duquesne’s Music Program and even performed with Rick at his senior recital. Following college Rick and Josh worked together starting their recording studio Epigram 154. The Dirty Sunshine continued to evolve and Josh became the second guitarist in the band as well as Jeremy playing drums.

With the completion of the tracking in 2006 Stephen Palko left the band to play bass for Ringling Brothers Circus. Tim Palko, Stephen’s brother, joined the band filling the bassist’s position for live performances and writing duties on new material. Josh decided to leave the band to focus on his new recording studio, Interference Audio. Stepping into Josh’s vacancy is Ross Hasting, formerly of Afterdrama. The current line up of Rick, Jeremy, Tim, and Ross continues the legacy of rock that is dynamic, enigmatic and explosive…this is The Dirty Sunshine.

What other bands have you been in?

Jeremy has performed with Chalk Outline Party while Ross has played with Afterdrama.

Do you see the band leaning more toward the punk or metal side?

I think we fit well in either genre but I would say we lean more towards the punk rock sound. With influences like Fugazi, Soundgarden, and Queens of the Stone Age, the broader spectrum of punk better encompasses the energy, dynamics, and explosiveness of the band.

How does a band embrace the sound of a ''punk rock Rush''?

The likeness to “a punk rock Rush” was a comment made by a fan sometime ago. Perhaps a more apt description is progressive music that is still song based. Modern progressive music is a bastion of vapid guitar wanking, pointless drum solos, and generally songs written to showcase the virtuosity and technique of the musicians. While composed of proficient musicians, The Dirty Sunshine’s music is more about songs and less about the individuals. Punk rock eschewed the excesses of the 1970’s mainstream music. The Dirty Sunshine embraces the raw creative power, chaotic energy and DIY attitude of the punk movement. The music turns away from typical progressive excesses yet still keeps its polish and inventiveness.

Is there a System of a Down influence?

Not really, but we do share some similarities. Both bands rock hard, change direction on a dime, and theatrical vocals.

This is the first album, right? How did the recording go?

Rick and Josh started tracking of the album in between sessions at their now recording studio Epigram 154. After finishing the tracking in late 2006, Epigram 154 closed its doors for good. Mixing began in early 2007 at TDS Sound, Rick’s new recording suite. Once finished the mixes were sent out to be mastered by Emily Lazar of The Lodge in NYC. Despite a slow start the album seemed to fall together organically once the mixing process was started. The goal was to meld the warmth and depth of classic rock recordings with the punch and ferocity of modern rock albums. The result is something wholly unique that captures the dynamics and energy of The Dirty Sunshine’s live performances while highlighting the music’s depth.

How has the been doing in terms of playing out and touring? Highlights?

We have been playing local venues about once or twice a month in preparation of our CD release. Performing at The 31st Street Pub, The Smiling Moose, The Bloomfield Bridge Tavern, The Rex Theater, and even Market Square, The Dirty Sunshine has been polishing its live show. We are currently planning to expand our musical reach with potential shows in Cleveland, Baltimore, and New York City.

Cheers and Thank you so much,
Rick McNerny
