Canadian band Independent George’s debut album Wake Up is a mix of heavy rock and melodic pop with varied influences. Michael A Brady is the creator of the project as vocalist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.
Wake Up was produced by John Shepp (Matthew Good Band, GOB, Bocephus King), who ended up falling in love with the music and joining the band as the lead guitarist. Canada''s legendary RUSH producer Terry Brown mixed Wake Up, while Peter J Moore (Tragically Hip, Sloan, Cowboy Junkies) mastered.
Brady’s influences include Chris Cornell, Foo Fighters, Maroon 5, Audio Slave and Stone Temple Pilots. On the record there is a lot of two part harmony and melodic vocals that were inspired by The Beatles. The many influences are reflected in the albums broad range of musical styles.
“When we first approached John, the main thing on my mind was to create a powerful pop rock album that was interesting and unique from one song to the next,” explains Brady. “We had an Indie budget and were lucky to have a producer who was passionate enough about our music to spend the time to get the results we wanted, in spite of the budget.”
With stand out tracks “Alright”, “Can’t Hide It”, “River” and the title track “Wake Up”, the album is one part hard rock and one part softer more melodic pop. With the concept of creating a memorable album on every level, extra attention was put on the album’s artwork by recruiting photographer Craig Waddell who came up with the covers Wake Up theme with a oversized clock and girl that looks like a porcelain doll with a half real, half animated look.
“The music is organic in the sense that each track was played throughout the song without it having to be digitally edited or corrected,” says Brady about the recording process. “There are a lot of guitars on this album, some would say this is a guitar album, and we included specialty guitars like the Baritone, 7 string electric and 12 string acoustic that I think has added an interesting feel and depth to our music”
