What is a Duvet Tuesday?

Duvet Tuesday is the debut album from British singer/songwriter Wendy Lloyd. A collection of modern pop songs that play lyrically with influences from classic storytellers such as Joni Mitchell, the songs offer a very personal take on real life, first love, backpacking, the media fascination with Pete Doherty, the tardiness of lovers and much besides.

“I’ve been writing songs non-stop for the past 7 years, so I have many to choose from. These just happen to be the ones I have spewed out and been enthused about in the past couple of years.”

It was Wendy’s older brother and sisters’ record collections that influenced a life long passion for all musical genres. However, despite a childhood playing the violin and piano to grades 7 and 6 respectively, Wendy’s desire to make music and find her own voice had lay dormant after finishing school. “Growing up, the classical stuff I struggled to play and enjoy, and the pop music I listened to in my bedroom seemed worlds apart. Nobody – including me – thought to encourage my passion to play down a more contemporary route. It’s a shame, but my life went a very different way.”

Pocket money and Saturday jobs funded the musical habit until she left school at 18 and, having worked in local radio whilst at sixth form college, Wendy landed work in the London media. A career as a radio DJ and TV presenter provided the paradise of free gigs and all the music she could want for many years, hosting shows everywhere from Radio Luxembourg to Virgin Radio to Radio 1 as well as presenting Top Of The Pops.

In 2001, after a failed relationship with a struggling New York musician, Wendy realised she had been living her musical passion vicariously for too long. She bought a guitar – “a second hand Alvarez in a NY pawn shop” - and suddenly it all made sense.

Since then Wendy has gigged extensively in London at the 12 Bar, the Bedford, the Barfly and the Kings Head. And after a false start with a production deal a few years ago, she has self financed this album. “Timing is everything in life. I am a firm believer in that – and this album really feels like the fruits of some time taken to get the sound and the songs right. By the time I met Anthony Galatis and worked with him in the studio on our first track I had worked with others, and I knew that this partnership was exactly what I was looking for. Anthony has produced this album with a real sensitivity – and we’ve done each song very quickly – and I am really pleased with the feel that we achieved with it together.”

So what is a Duvet Tuesday? “A duvet Tuesday is more than a Duvet Day: it’s one of those weekdays where you don’t have to be somewhere, not work, not anywhere, and you don’t have any things that need to be done, and you can stay in bed, with your lover: snuggle up, and know the world is carrying on - and today, just today, it doesn’t need you”
