A New Holiday Song Comes Along!
O.K, I''m going out on a limb here: Christmas in New York City is one of the all time great Christmas songs! So, there it is, and now that it''s said, it sounds pretty good to me. Now because I am a native New Yorker, my enthusiasm is high, granted, but my opinion isn''t biased. You see, it requires some real New York chutzpah to christen a new Christmas song in the same snow with such classics as Nat Cole''s The Christmas Song; Paul McCartney''s A Wonderful Christmastime; Eartha Kitt''s Santa Baby; Bruce Springsteen''s Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, and other yuletide favorites, but then, this is a song whose time has come, and it belongs right up there with the best of them. Who am I not to boldly sing its praises in public.
What makes this jazzy sing-a-long put Christmas in a special way? Well, it''s the catchy melody, a sophisticated smooth jazz fusion, brilliantly engineered by Jeff Solomon(Fellus Recording Studios New York, NY). Then, it’s the theatrically seasoned baritone/tenor of singer/songwriter Arnold Pinnix who in 2005, under his nom de guerre, A. Gregory Harris, penned the score as well as the stage musical Christmas In New York City in which he starred and performed the song, and from which it naturally takes its title. And finally: it''s simply the magical aura of the “Big Apple.” There''s just something special about New York City. And it is a wonderful holiday place.
All music lovers including kids from one to ninety-two (to borrow Nat Cole''s immortal phrase) will enjoy Christmas In New York City for many years to come; the fun lyrics delivered by Harris''s smooth vocal sophistication, and the engaging upbeat tempo carried by Solomon''s crisp keyboard arrangements thoroughly resonate with the spirited pulse of the holiday season. While other voices have sampled the tune, and another Alberta Records cover is forthcoming—this is one of those easy to do but difficult to ruin musical gems—, right now, Harris''s original is in a class by itself.
Wait till carolers put their pipes to this one!
To be sure, I love this wonderful song and I''ll sing its praises for a long time. Now of course, you can''t simply take my word for it; you (the public) will render your all-powerful decree on this matter, and I''ve a hunch you''ll soon be singing its praises right along with me—and hey; we''ll all have another great sing-along to enjoy for the holidays!

SOME HISTORY ABOUT THE SONG
When Christmas In New York City, the stage play (a musical adaptation of Dickens''s A Christmas Carol, produced by 3THW Theatricals and starring https://www.tradebit.comgory Harris) premiered off Broadway in 2005 it met with less than rave reviews. All was not lost, though. While reviews were wanting, audiences enjoyed the music. And the title song Christmas in New York City (Harris''s signature performance in the play) won the unequivocal admiration of both critic and confidant.
People just couldn''t get enough of it! Realizing this, 3THW Music Publishing CEO Joseph Henry encouraged Harris to record the song for the commercial market. The result was a cast album containing all 19 songs from the play. Good, but maybe not exactly where Henry wanted to go. And while Henry and Harris were both confident that several of the songs were potentially commercial hits, the album was never published and so, never enjoyed an official release, and into the publisher''s archive it went; the veritable industry graveyard of so-so albums and singles.
But Christmas In New York City denied the power of the spade and it wouldn''t die, it couldn''t. Demands for its release as a single increased as callers frequently beckoned the publisher—people knew that the song was alive and well and they wanted it! Then in 2007, Joseph Henry teamed with Alberta Records CEO Deyland Anderson (a huge fan of the song who even flirted with recording it himself), and not long thereafter, Alberta Records at long last released Christmas In New York City as a single.
This exciting jazz cabaret throwback, reminiscent of the Nat Cole, Mel Torm''e (who composed The Christmas Song), and Ella Fitzgerald eras, in time, just may prove to be among the all-time great holiday releases.
