Los jóvenes expresan sus experiencias cotidianas utilizando diferentes métodos artísticos que consideran ''off the hook'', o sea, incorporando una fusión de música hip-hop, rap y reggae, y en ocasiones, un toque de ''dragging'' creado por los DJs. Pero no se alarmen progenitores, ya que este movimiento es en verdad un reflejo de ustedes, quienes fueron los pioneros de la rebeldía. Me refiero a la década de los 60 la cual le dio comienzo a un cambio cultural y social en nuestra sociedad, inscrito en la historia popular como el movimiento de los ''hippies''.
El reggae comenzó en Jamaica
Fue en la década del setenta y con el transcurso del tiempo ha ido evolucionando. Panamá le dio raíces al sonido reggae latino a mediados de los años ochenta, impulsado como ''underground'' por Chicho Man y después comercializado por El General. Mientras en Panamá iba evolucionando el reggae, Puerto Rico, a cargo de Vico C, le dio vida al rap latino, y así, desde dos puntos folklóricamente diferentes, pero unidos por las mismas raíces latinas, nace el movimiento del reggeton, o conocido hoy día en la calle como el ''perreo''. El movimiento del reggae caribeño tuvo su comienzo en una discoteca de la islita borinqueña conocida como "The Noise", donde la juventud, seguidores de la vieja escuela del rap, como Vico C, se daban cita para ''sonear'' sus líricas utilizando pistas instrumentales de los reconocidos raperos afroamericanos y del reggae jamaiquino.
Los primeros exponentes de este movimiento urbano del reggae/rap boricua fueron Baby Rasta y Gringo, Guanábanas, Maicol y Manuel, Polaco, Don Chezina y Daddy Yankee. Al comienzo de la evolución del reggeaton, y tal como sus homólogos los afroamericanos, las líricas eran más crudas, basadas en violencia, drogas y la explotación de mujeres. Es por esta razón, que este sonido se había mantenido básicamente ''underground'', y no fue hasta época reciente, en busca de aceptación de un público más diverso y a nivel internacional, que este género musical ha ido evolucionado, intercambiando las líricas obscenas por las ''risqué''.
