The band walks a fine line between epitomizing and caricaturing their genre. The major influences are Iggy Pop, The Adicts and Lou Reed. The emphasis of The Drownies is raw, over-the-top rock music. The music is straight from the gut with lyrics to match. The songs are a whirlwind of raw, original energy aimed at anything from lost love ("marie") to the government ("international conspiracy"). In mood, the lyrics vary from funny ("wimp," "babe you''re gonna break your face riding around on that motorcycle") to poignant ("let go") and even some where it is difficult to tell which category they fall into ("30 seconds to blow," "midlife crisis"). Through this vagueness The Drownies project attempts to turn the nihilistic nature of punk music on itself. In "gas company" When the wall of distorted guitar is blaring over the machine-gun drums along with the distorted vocals screaming "gas company, they''re telling me, pay up or die, 775" you may not be able to tell how much of this is serious and how much is humor, but you will feel the raw energy and power of the song.
In keeping with a tongue-in-cheek approach to music, The Drownies consists of Zack Lemon on lead guitar, rhythm guitar, vocals...well, everything. This allowed him complete control over the direction of the songs and allowed the album to take on a unique feel. The entire project was conceived and recorded in 2 months.
