Now I am compelled to write you a bit of my story…
My parents along with Stephen Powers started the music club, Charlotte’s Web in Rockford, IL in 1972. My Mom books the acts, (still), and my Dad, records them, (still). This has amassed quite an extensive collection. I started a business, https://www.tradebit.com about 4 years ago with the lofty goal of digitizing, preserving, cataloguing and distributing, (with artist permission), these live concert recordings.
Recently I digitized a concert from October 5, 1977 with Mike Seeger and Elizabeth Cotten, wow the historical magic! Before that was a concert from March of 1980 featuring U. Utah Phillips opening for Doc & Merle Watson. The audience is positively exuberant! And before that, about 10 hours of Gamble Rogers.
Bill Staines just approved of the release of his concert recordings; one from 1979 is now available. I grew up in this magical world of music, musicians and other artists. My sister and I made food for them and made their beds and they made music.
Now it is 35+ years later, (and 15,000+ hours of live concert recordings). We continue to record the concerts that Charlotte’s Web presents as well as those presented by other local arts organizations, now digitally. In addition, and more importantly, we are digitizing and preserving the more than 25 years of great performance archives. These recordings are priceless and need to be preserved so we are transferring them from the original magnetic tape to a digital format.
In order to complete this important project, we need public support as well as financial backing. We have been spreading the word locally and now have more than 20 Charter Members. We know there are many more
people and institutions who would be interested in our archive museum. We just need to reach them.
