BIO

Emerging from British Columbia''s lower west coast, DS Sutton arrived in 2001 to a scene practically devoid of their brand of emotive rock.
Influenced by such seminal bands as Sunny Day Real Estate and The Promise Ring, while remaining current and compared to the likes of Taking Back Sunday and The Used, DS Sutton continues to prove their appeal to both younger and more mature music fans alike.

The band released a full length entitled "Towards the Stars and Falling" in the fall of 2003 which featured epic, lengthy song structures with many layers and textures, often building to a climactic finish.

In January 2004 new lead singer Derrick Mensch joined the outfit and the band embarked on a new musical journey, honing their song writing skills and focusing more towards just writing good songs, rather than the indulgence of the older material. While the band undoubtedly became catchier, they were unwilling to become just another pop/rock act. To avoid these trappings they continued to play with odd time signatures and powerful song dynamics, fitting these elements into their newer, more accessible tracks.

In the fall of 2004 they released a new EP called simply, "Hope", of which they have already sold 500 copies. The EP displays their new direction with solid production and quality musicianship, not to mention soaring and heartfelt vocals shining through each track.

As the band continues to play show after show in the Vancouver area with popular groups such as Emery and Stutterfly, they gain a larger fan base and continue to impress with their frantic and professional live performances.

Not satisfied to rest on their laurels, the band continues their prolific ways, writing some of the strongest material to date and hitting the road this summer.

Keep your eyes and ears open for DS Sutton on their western Canada tour this summer!

Album Review
Once again, indie/emo rockers DS Sutton have hit the mark with their newest sound.

The Hope EP is the second release from the group. Their first release was a full-length album, Towards the Stars and Falling.

Hope surpasses its predecessor in almost every way. For starters, new lead vocalist Derrick Mensch (of Waking Jude) takes the band''s songs to stronger and higher plateaus, while freeing up the rest of the band to let loose. He also brings winds of change in the songwriting department, moving the band from long epics toward tighter, more accessible, rock songs.

The first track This is the Way the World is Ending kicks off the CD with a fast tempo and anthemic quality.

From there, they move into an older song, I am the Mighty.

Track three, Paths of the Dead, is a departure for the group and is a bit of a jaunt into the realm of a band such as Modest Mouse.

Falling so Fast and The Isolation Process close out the EP. The latter mixes sweet melodies, chunky guitar riffs and vocal harmonies.

In addition to Mensch, the band consists of the rhythm section of Josh Bergen and Jeff Harder, and the crunching guitar work of Edmund J. Buhler and Jeremy Klassen.
