Notes from "Jumpin''
At Shadows"

This is my third full length recording and I am very proud of it. I am very happy to have some special guests on it which I will make mention of in the following paragraphs.
"Magic" Dave Therault, makes his recording debut here. He is a pioneer in developing a style for playing jazz standards on a diatonic harmonica, an approach rarely https://www.tradebit.com handles traditional Blues harp as well as advanced jazz-like melodic styles with equal facility.
For an example of Therault more fully exploiting the traditional "tongue block" technique pioneered by early Delta and Chicago harmonica masters to get his B-3 style, give a listen to "Pick Up the Pieces" and the title track, "Jumpin'' at Shadows."

I want to emphasize the fact that no keyboards were used on this recording!
Guitar wizard Brian "Hash Brown" Calway also lends a hand here with his distinctive style. Calway hails from Dallas, Texas, where he is a major kingpin in the local and regional Blues scene. He can be heard most notably on "She Can''t Not Be Satisfied" and "I am a Loner."
I consider Calway to be an expert in many styles of Blues and was really excited when he agreed to appear in the studio with us.
Hash Brown''s bassist Terry Montgomery also did me the honor of appearing for this recording. He is one of Dallas'' best and one of my personal favorites. I wish to thank all the musicians that helped me make this fun and fine recording.
I usually record only my own original material as I have over 100 songs to my credit. However, Eddie Kirkland has been a big influence and inspiration to me and so I felt very much inclined to do two of his songs here also.
In addition to various tunings on this recording I also used both right and left handed guitars, something which no body else in the Blues business does that I know of. This enables me to cover a wide variety of styles from Muddy Waters and Albert King to Buddy Guy and I owe all these pioneers a great debt.
I want to thank Connie and Ken, Yoko, Hash Brown, Bobby Arnold, Magic Dave, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and all my fans and friends all over the world for giving me moral, financial and spiritual support. Thank you.

Handy Award nominees, L.A. Jones & The Blues Messengers

have been tearing up the floorboards in roadhouses all over the world for the last three decades, touring constantly and playing over 200 gigs a year and thrilling Blues fans where ever they perform.

L.A. Jones and The Blues Messengers represent a new breed from the old school of the blues; crossing racial, spiritual and musical boundaries. Drawing from their past experience playing and recording with many of the great Blues stars like pianist Pinetop Perkins , guitarists Otis Rush, Jimmy Rogers, Luther Johnson and saxophonist Joe Houston they have pioneered a style that is all their own, blending the ever popular jump swing of the great Texas and West Coast traditions. At the same time they have not forgotten to remain deeply and firmly rooted in the 1950''s Chicago Blues traditions.
First and foremost however L.A. Jones is an entertainer in the business of show-biz. Over the years L. A. Jones has honed these entertainment skills to a razor sharp edge, bringing down the house using dynamics reminiscent of the mind-boggling technique of Buddy Guy or the note economics and soul-searching feel of his hero, B.B. King . In addition he uses many different tunings on as many different guitars (both right and left-handed) that keep people talking and musicians fighting among themselves.

There is not a gig that L. A. Jones plays without some pleased patron commenting on left handed guitarist L. A. Jones'' ability to effortlessly switch between left and right handed guitars and play either with equal facility and at the same time produce totally different and totally incredible sounds and styles. This is something that NOBODY, but nobody, else in the business does.

David Hussong, of Vintage Guitar Magazine puts it another way when he says L.A. Jones is “...Relentless in his sense of
dynamics, creating and designing his solos to take you right out to (and sometimes over) the edge.”

“In 1978 I had a realization that my strong thing was The Blues and that I should specialize in The Blues and so I''ve been hammering at it ever since,” says L. A. Jones.

Hammer at it he does, and with the best of them as evidenced by the reviews, endorsements and support he receives from all that he reaches with his music, humor, spirit and far-reaching, multi-faceted talent.

“L.A. bends, slings, pulls, hammers and thrusts his own brand of guitar bravado with an intensity and excitement that transcends the club environment. Although an expert interpreter (as shown in some of his previous works) L.A. shows that he is a
formidable writer as well, penning tunes in the same vein as the masters yet imposing his own unique structural and melodic twists and turns.” says Bobby Owsinski of Eurojam International.

“Blues Revue", one of the world''s most widely read Blues magazines says, “Jones really hits his stride on the Albert King pastiche, Long Distance Love, demonstrating a mastery of the fine points of King''s style”.

L. A. Jones and the Blues Messengers recordings also showcase L.A. Jones'' formidable talent as a songwriter, arranger and producer. They made history in September of 2000 when they laid down one of the World''s first Blues multimedia DVD recordings in Surround Sound , in a state of the art recording facility. Titled, "Birthday Suit" it features L.A. Jones riffing in style with some of the best musicians (Magic Dave Therault, Rick Reed, and Benny Yee) in the world. It has some new originals, acoustic numbers, electric songs, interviews and behind the scenes footage.

In addition L.A. Jones has also lent his talents as a sideman to other recording projects including Jesse Austin''s “ Steel Trap ”, which reached number 5 on the national Blues Charts and “The Blues and Nothin'' Else” with the great Joe Houston. That recording was voted Number ONE Blues Album of the Year by The L.A. Jazz Times. L.A. Jones also is on another Joe Houston''s, "On Account of You" another ground-breaking multimedia, Surround Sound DVD, which unfortunately has yet to be released.

Another release of theirs “Live At The Pink Panther”, recorded in the midst of one of their many hot and heavy tours of Europe is as good as the best and better than the rest and that is exemplified by the many rave reviews this recording has thus far garnered.

Their latest release, "https://www.tradebit.comle https://www.tradebit.comrt - Tribute to Albert King " is an excellent example of L.A. Jones'' ability to channel the late great Albert King that is truly uncanny.

To date L.A. Jones has performed in every state in the Continental USA and has toured Japan and also in eleven countries in Europe, equally comfortable headlining festivals, in the recording studio or intimate club settings.

Don''t miss L. A. Jones'' entertaining, lively, humorous, deep Blues when he comes to your town!

Lyrics to: Jumpin'' At Shadows
(BB03CD, 1994)

I Am a Loner

I ''m a loner,
travelin'' from town to town.
I ''m a loner,
travelin'' from town to town.
don''t hang with me,
I don''t want no one around.

Every time I say hello,
it''s time to say good-bye.
Every time I say hello,
it''s time to say good-bye.
Once in a while it hurts me,
I just can''t tell the reason why.

I''m a loner,
hangin'' by myself.
I can''t get the one I want,
got to use some body else,
I ''m a loner,
travelin'' from town to town.
Don''t hang with me,
I don''t want no one around.
She Can''t Not be Satisfied

I met a girl last night,
she can''t be satisfied.
I met a girl last night,
she can''t be satisfied.
Said I never ain''t had enough of nothin'',
but you welcome to try.

So I worked all night,
worked my fingers down to the bone.
So I worked all night,
worked my fingers down to the bone.
No matter how much I begged,
She wouldn''t leave my lovin'' alone

Yeah I worked all night,
worked ''till I got sore,
Yeah I worked all night,
worked ''till I got sore.
Then she said do it to it,
Can''t you give me a little more?

Yes she''s way too much,
way too much woman for me,
Yes she''s too much,
way too much woman for me,
No matter how much I give her,
she won''t leave my lovin'' be.

Stop Now

I want you to stop now,
I think you''re going way too far.
Stop now baby,
I think you''re going way too far.
I know you don''t really love me,
you just like the way I play my guitar.

Told you that I love you,
would always wait on you,
now you write to me,
saying we are through,
I want you to stop now,
I think you''re going way too far.
I know you don''t really love me,
you just like the way I play my guitar.

Where''s the love we had,
wonder where did it go,
got another man
don''t need me no more
I want you to stop now,
I think you''re going way too far.
You don''t really love me,
you just like the way I play my guitar.

Told me that you loved me,
now you changed your mind.
Flew away and left me
all alone here cryin'',
I want you to stop now,
I think you''re going way too far.
You don''t really love me,
you just like the way I play my guitar.

Goin'' on the Road

Packin'' all my things,
Yeah, I''m goin'' out on the road.
I''m packin'' all my things,
yeah, I''m goin'' out on the road.
Yeah, I''m leavin'' you baby,
I swear I''m gonna make the highway my home.

I don''t need no T.V.,
I don''t need no stereo,
I don''t need no a V.C.R.,
I don''t need no telephone.
I''m packin'' all my things,
yeah, I''m goin'' out on the road.
Yeah, I''m leavin'' you baby,
I swear I''m gonna make the highway my home.

I know I''m gonna miss you,
but, I gotta do what I gotta do.
I know it''s kind of sudden,
but, I''m here to say we''re through.
Yeah, I''m packin'' all my things,
yeah, I''m goin'' out on the road.
Yeah, I''m leavin'' you baby,
I''m gonna make the highway my home.

Now I been ramblin'' this old highway,
since 1983.
Out here tryin'' to make it for you,
but now I gotta find me.
Packin'' all my things,
I''m goin'' out on the road.
I''m leavin'' you baby,
gonna make the highway my home.

Pick Up the Pieces (E. Kirkland)

Someday someday someday someday
my darlin, you gonna find someone
that you really can love
and you''re gonna give him all your love
but one mornin'' soon you''re gonna wake up
and that someone you love gonna be gone
its gonna break your sweet little heart
everybody needs somebody
yes they do don''t give up making love
you gotta try try try try lovin heals
it may not be what you want but it''ll sure be what you need
now if the one that you love should ever break should ever break
your sweet little heart there ain''t but one thing baby you can do
Pick up the pieces, Pick up the pieces, Pick up the pieces
an keep on an keep on an keep on marchin'' on.

Long Distance Love

I got a long distance love,
and you know it''s killin'' me.
Yeah, I got a long distance love,
and you know it''s killin'' me.
How can I love a woman,
Yeah when she''s way across the seas.

Now I call her on the phone,
''and she''s never at home,
I try to send her a letter,
and it''s returned address unknown.
I got a long distance love,
and you know it''s killin'' me.
How can I love a woman,
yeah, when she''s way across the seas.

Now when its 4 A.M. in Dallas,
it''s 6 P.M. over there.
She said don''t call me I''ll call you
but she won''t say when or where
I got a long distance love
and you know it''s killin'' me
How can I love a woman,
yeah, when she''s way across the seas.

Girl I Been Dreamin'' About

I been dreamin about a girl,
She''s always resting on my mind,
She''s got stars in her eyes,
on her I''d spend my last thin dime,
the girl I been dreamin'' about,
I''m here to say she''s fine.
I keep dreamin about her.
she always resting on my mind.

She got long brown hair,
Tiny little feet.
Freckles on her face,
she''s a dream complete.
It''s the girl I been dreamin'' about,
I''m here to say she''s fine.
Every time she kiss,
make me feel like this is my first time.

She''s the stuff that dreams are made of
She''s the girl of my dreams.
when I try to describe her,
words they fail for me
Its the girl I been dreamin'' about
I''m here to say she''s fine.
I keep dreamin'' about her.
she''s always resting on my mind.

Now when she smiles,
she send chills down my spine,
the blood rush to my head
like hot sake wine.
It''s the girl I been dreamin'' about,
I''m here to say she''s fine.
she''s the one I''m dreamin'' of
feels like I''m in love for the first time.

When she calls my name
it''s music to my ears.
I look into her eyes
and it drives away my fears
It''s the girl I been dreamin'' about,
I''m here to say she''s fine.
I keep dreamin'' ''bout her,
She always restin'' on my mind.

I Get The Job Done

Lot of people talkin''
''bout what they can and can''t not do.
Cryin'' and fightin'' and carryin'' on,
sayin'' their life is through.
Other peoples around,
all they care ''bout is havin'' fun,
but if you want reliability,
I really am the one.
I get the job done.
Yeah, I get the job done.
I get the job done baby,
yeah, so we can have us some fun.

I work hard to keep from workin'',
''cause I value my spare time.
I play hard when I play,
to keep you off my mind.
If you got somethin that needs fixin'',
I''ll put it in black and white.
I''ll do it right the first time,
if it takes all day and night.
I get the job done.
yeah, I get the job done.
I get the job done baby,
yeah, so we can have us some fun.

Now if you want the job done right,
sooner or later you''ll come to me.
''Cause when it comes to lovin'',
all my work is guaranteed.
If you''re looking for a handy man,
I got just what you need.
I want you to search no further,
no reason to beg and plead.
I get the job done.
Yes, I get the job done.
I get the job done baby,
yeah, so we can have us some fun.

Jumpin at Shadows

I''m jumpin'' at shadows,
yeah, my nerves are shot.
Yeah, I''m jumpin'' at shadows,
yeah, my nerves are shot.
First your love gone cold,
then you come on so hot.

I''m in a room without any windows,
see a locked door without a key,
I''m in a maze of shadows,
cold chills runnin'' over me.
Yeah , I''m jumpin'' at shadows,
yeah, my nerve''s are fried.
Yes, when you hear me moanin'' and groanin'',
It''s my love for you thirstin'' down inside.

Can''t make head nor tails out of a thing,
there''s a fog and I can''t see.
Every time you come to town woman,
That''s what you do to me.
Yeah, I''m jumpin'' at shadows,
yeah, my nerves are shot.
The love I have for you,
people that''s all I''ve got.

My feet don''t want to walk,
I''m stumblin'' all around.
My tongue don''t want to talk,
feel like I''m a bumbling clown.
Yeah, I''m jumpin at shadows,
yeah, my nerves are shot.
Yes, first your love''s gone cold,
then you come on so hot.

Somewhere in Your Heart (E. Kirkland)

Oh my Darlin''
you know I love you.
Oh my Darlin''
you know I love you.
Without your love,
I swear my whole life is through.

All my love,
all my love belong to you.
All my love baby,
all my love belong to you.
If you should die before I do,
I swear I''d end my life to be with you.

I want you to take my hand,
and please lead me on.
Take my hand baby,
and please lead me on.
Somewhere in your heart,
please let me make my home.
