CLASSICAL: Chamber Music, CLASSICAL: Romantic Era
This late work in the short life of a genius capitalizes
expansively on the liesurely form known to 18th century society as the divertimento. Numerous masterpieces by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven (ref. NY Philomusica Records catalogue) preceded it, all exemplars of the elegant form and none more free of anxiety than the Octet. Its melodic splendor and sensuous intimacy are the perfect vehicle for the poetic utterances of the winds, led by Joseph Rabbai, a founding member of the ensemble who rejoins it after 23 years as principal clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, partnered by frequent guest Minnesota Orchestra Principal Bassoonist, John Miller and, in his final performance with the ensemble, Founder and Artistic Director, A. Robert Johnson, horn. These three are gracefully and fully matched by the quintet of strings led by Katharina Grossmann. Dennis Rooney''s review in The Strad captures the sense of it all:
"The genial mood and tonal suaveness of the ensemble made every note of the long work a pleasure to hear."
