PERCUSSION TEXTURES 2004 vol 2

The MMA is a Record label that chronicles the work
of Mike Mahaffay going back to the early 1970''s.
Improvisation is the core of his work: spontaneous
creation. It is through the music, in both the
individual and collective sense, that the process
of self-realization takes place.
Percussion Textures is a duo begun by Mike Mahaffay
and Armen Halburian in the early 1970''s. It was a part
of a musical cooperative "Free Life Comunication", that
subsequently went on to perform as a duet on it''s own.
They reunited again in 2004 in the Pacific Northwest to
combine with additional musicians, creating a further
extension of the collaborative work begun in the 70''s.

ARMEN HALBURIAN

Armen Halburian, a drummer and percussionist for 25 years, has earned a reputation as an imaginative and tasteful musician. He has attained prominence and recognition among musicians as one whose high energy level and personal
style feeds back inspiration and creative spirit. Totally at home in a free improvisatory where creative interplay yields spontaneous results, he is equally capable of drawing out new levels of interpretation from
written compositions.
Armen believes in music as an expressive vehicle that touches, sensitizes and raises the human spirit. To him music is a means of communicating awareness of life and love.
A native New Yorker, Armen began the study of drums at the age of 12. By 17 he was playing professionally, traveling throughout the United States.
On thew road, Armen gathered knowlrdge of his instrument, gradually discovering its role in cultures around the world. Back home his ideas crystallized and he began to acquire some of the unusual percussion instruments he’d heard of. Starting with gongs, bells, and the dumbeg,
reflecting on his Armenian heritage, he expanded into Middle Eastern, African, Asian, and South American instruments. As Armen grew versatile in their
use, he became aware of the vast range of possibilities in their combined assemblage and developed an original panorama of instruments. Onstage, the array resembles a magicians workshop where Armen weaves among his tools, responding to the atmosphere of the moment. Here he creates sheets and clusters of sound, adding new flavor to the rhythms and expanding the dimensions of the composition. His music has colored many settings, from solo concerts to symphony orchestras, from church services in New York to record sessions with Buddhist monks in Japan.
Armen''s vitality is a symbol of life''s inner drive ând the music he creates is the physical manifestation of that spiritual force. His goals are to fulfill his potential as a musician and to uplift the hearts and souls of people
Percussion Textures is joined by Nick Guifro on Conga and Traps, Ric Masterson on Tablas, Mark Whitecage on Clarinet and Alto, Rozanne Levine on Clarinet, Scott Steele on Guitar, and Eric Hausman on Stick and Guitar.
