Abra la Puerta or "Open the Door",was constructed from a five year period of live performance. My music comes from an inner voice and my experiences in traditional rock, blues and folk bands have added to my guitar playing. I learned so much about guitar, working for years with the best talent I could find, but I was always hearing something different in music; some muse that just kept trying to talk through me.

Some alternate tunings come from Robert Johnson and my early blues days. Later I learned of the Hawaiian masters who called this tuning, Early Mauna Loa or slack key. The Spanish or Savastapol pre-standard guitar tuning is part of this method.

Recently I found Ziryab/Zorab a Kurdish 8th century Oud player, the father of modern guitar in Spain. He introduced the fifth string to the Oud; a fretless, plucked six stringed (in corsos or courses) proto guitar tuned in fourths, encouraging experimentation for me.

Latin, especially flamenco rhythms are natural to me. I love to construct lead melodies over the placid finger style. Blues is my first form and my passion for flamenco seems to synchronize, giving my songs something I rarely hear in other music. Both the gypsy and the rural southern Delta blues men shared something. Their music forms were both contemporary in time and the social stigma and persecution by the upper classes forced these common guitarists and song writers to create music with a message that everyone can understand!

Anger, love, hate, tolerance and intolerance. A pathos few can ever experience imbue these forms. “When you see your brother dead on the road you must cry out loud…” Gitano/gypsy or “Swinging from the gallows tree…” blues roots; how much more can anyone take without the release of music. Somehow I feel this intense emotion and try to translate it into song.

I took my CD to Spain and found an eager audience. Spanish audiences love blues and rock but with the ideas of flamenco entwined in American forms they became excited about something familiar presented in a new way. My hopes are to bridge the distance of the Atlantic Ocean with this unique marriage of musical forms.

The Songs:

Ojos Centenarios...100 year old eyes, what have they seen?
Algiers...war swirls through the hope for peace...
Leo Pastorius...Leo Kotke and Jaco Pastorius for you both..
Playa Blanca...a white beach in Costa Rica...
Gitano California...Gypsy Surfers..
Dejela Abierta...keep the door OPEN...
Pastoral Variation...one of many variations, feel the peace...
Alma Flamenca...the heart of Flamenco...
Colorado Blues...where I started...
Boabdil El Chico...the last Moorish king forced from Granada..."weep like a woman for what you could not hold like a man"
Santa Fe...the arrival of the Spanish kings driving out Boabdil, the golden age of Al-Andalus ends, the age of discovery begins.

Peace to all who come here. Look for "Rely On Me" and "Natural Mystic" some of my early work.

Sincerely, John Stone
