They have always sung. Over forty years ago, on their first date, Bob brought along his ukulele and sang to Rose, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”, a song then popular in folk circles. She actually (Picture Here?)thought he had written the song, and was thoroughly and permanently captivated. Bob did not claim claim he wrote the song, but simply let nature take it’scourse. It wasn’t until they had been married for several years that Rose discovered the song was not original!
Bob and Rose were not just a couple, they were a duet. Rose’s rich alto voice was a perfect foil for his voice and guitar playing, and they were soon playing gigs together. When their daughter was born, the two of them sang to her. Now that they have grandchildren, they sing to them. In church, around campfires, when they had friends to visit, when they went to parties, they sang.
Music was always a part of their family’s heritage. Grandfathers on both sides taught at week-long singing schools which were then in vogue at rural churches. Gospel quartets were popular, and family members seemed always on stage somewhere.
A few short years later, they have recorded three CDs, begun building their own line of mountain dulcimers and banjos, and are performing at every opportunity. Completely retired from day jobs now, they are free to travel with their RV to arts and craft fairs, music festivals and work shops. Bob is an entertaining and engaging teacher, and Rose is an able and knowledgeable assistant.
Their effectiveness as teachers stems from a consuming desire that those who attend their classes learn not just to play it, but understand it’s roots - and love it for what it is.
