Benefit Concert Raises $8,000 for Hospice

The “Blue Point of View” CD release party staged at Ft. Coombs Armory in Historic Downtown Apalachicola was a genuine winner in every way.
Organized by Allan Garry of Apalachicola, singer/songwriter/guitarist of the Candy Kitchen Blues Band, and Renee Bacot, owner of Caper’s Catering of Apalach, the event raised more than $8,000 for Big Bend Hospice. And that money will be used exclusively in Franklin County.
These may be tough times but local businesses generously came up with some big bucks for corporate tables. Individual ticket sales filled the remaining seats. The last two ducats sold to a young couple spending the weekend at the Gibson Inn. They just happened to wander past the Armory as the band was doing its late afternoon sound check.
At about the same time scores of volunteers were scurrying about the facility. Preparing food; setting up tables and decorating the premises in anticipation of the 7 pm start time. For the first hour some grazed and some gobbled from the several tables lined with an abundance of Bacot’s culinary delights.
I had the distinct pleasure of serving as MC for the benefit event and at 8 pm conducted a mini-auction of a half-dozen items donated by generous local businesses.
Then it was show time.
The Candy Kitchen Blues Band then performed the dozen original blues/rock songs featured on their brand new “Blue Point of View” CD. All in attendance also received a free copy of the CD. You can order your copy by calling 850-653-6104.
For those unaware of all of Apalachicola’s colorful history, the “Candy Kitchen” was built soon after the Civil War and survived Apalach’s 1900 fire that destroyed much of the downtown area. It served as a homemade candy and ice cream shop in the early 1900’s and in the lively ‘50’s it became a “juke.”
Later the Market Street/Avenue G building became home for “Forgotten Coastline.” The structure has since been moved and is being renovated by Garry. This is where the band held many a rehearsal- thus the band’s name..
Comprised of musicians from throughout the state, the band also had plenty of support from “friends” for this performance. Included was Mary Everhart of Tallahassee, who belted out some of her favorite numbers. Also instrumental in this benefit concert were the fine folks from “From the Heart” recording studio in Sopchoppy. Because of folks like this, the warm and charming Wakulla County community has evolved into a real musical hotbed in the region.
The benefit was the brainchild of Garry, who has been performing in this area for many years. He wanted to find a way to pay tribute to a now deceased former band member, who, in his last months, was given considerable support by Big Bend Hospice volunteers.
It was a fitting tribute. I’m certain Steve loved it.
