Details:
Around a campfire in the woods of Northern Michigan is where Keith May (Bass/Vox; 26), Steve Stetson (Drums; 25), Matt Hines (Lead Vox; 26), Peter LeClair (Lead Guitar/Vox; 26), Jon Rice (Rhythm Guitar/Vox; 26), Brian Kwasnik (Piano/Vox; 26), Carmen Paradise (Vox/Percussion; 26), and Erik Pederson (Organ; 25) first had the idea for the musical coalition that is now Bear Lake.

Having played for years in countless other bands, backing acts such as Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, Umphrey’s Mcgee, David Allen Coe, Shinedown, Ekoostik Hookah, The Hard Lessons, Loretta Lynn, 100 Watt Head, Def Leppard, Styx, Shooter Jennings, Grand Funk Railroad and many others, these lifelong friends (dating back to kindergarten) decided to create a project based more on quality and friendship rather than purely monetary gain. They recorded the tracks for their debut album, “Catch the Sun” at Rustbelt Studios (Electric Six, Kid Rock, The Go, Sponge, and Deadstring Brothers) under the guidance of Eric Hoegemeyer and Al Sutton. The tracks were recorded in just two days, and now, only months after that night in the North Michigan woods, Bear Lake is ready to share their musical enumeration with the world.

Bear Lake has forged its own musical niche by blending a diverse array of influences such as The Shins, Pinback, Ween, Weezer, Elliott Smith, The Beatles, Radiohead, The Strokes, Ben Folds Five, The Killers and more. Their debut album, “Catch the Sun” is said to “incorporate all the lucid fantasy of a drug-induced voyage with none of the wonky after effects.” Hines’ breezy, laid back vocals are the perfect antithesis to the darker, sometimes tragic undertones that reside beneath each song’s polished coating.

Because of the larger band size, Bear Lake is able to create any sound array that they can imagine. From the largest, chest-rattling anthems hammered out by Stetson’s “thunderous, rhythmic eclecticism,” to the simplest acoustic daydream, Bear Lake can scale the full range of musical diversity.

Finally, thanks to a crew of talented musical artisans, Bear Lake has developed one of the most unique and powerful live shows in Michigan. With cleverly-scripted video sequences and an ambient onstage persona, Bear Lake is able to submerge their audience even deeper into the strange Wonka-like world that they flawlessly manipulate.
