Easyco Interview from the Tucson Citizen, 4/23/03, by Polly Higgins:

If the mama''s boys of Good Charlotte think they''ve cornered the nice-guys-who-rock market, they obviously haven''t met Tucson''s Easyco. Peppered throughout the 2-year-old band''s conversation are words like "positivity", "family", and "communication", as they relate to a worthwhile, mutually beneficial relationship with fans.

"It''s a more reciprocal return of energy," says guitarist Kenyon Hood.

"Yeah," his brother and main songwriter Cameron Hood agrees. "It''s like playing for family."

"The band''s more than just the people who play in it," says drummer Mike Higgins (no relation to reporter). "We want to nurture that."

Which Easyco do, not only playing often but refusing to get pigeonholed into any particular Tucson music scene...

"Easyco, they are the best-drawing band in Tucson," says Brad Nozicka, chief executive of CAL Productions, a regional promoter that owns [Tucson club] City Limits. "They draw about 200 to 300 people. Their street work must be amazing."

It is. It''s also very much an outgrowth of a band philosophy that seeks to blur the lines between those on stage and those in the audience.

Family-friend-turned-business manager Gina Rossi suggested the idea of the Easycollective, a core group of 22 within the group''s fan club - Friends of Easyco - who pass out fliers and generally spread the word about a band they love...

The fan club, Kenyon says, is "a recognition of music as an expression and communication with the audience."

Higgins likens Easyco''s fan-centric approach to that of The Grateful Dead. "When you say ''Grateful Dead,'' you think of the fan base."

Lyrically the band makes its way through universal troubles - especially that most universal heartache of all, relationships - often grounded in struggles of the spirit. Cameron notes that he is a Christian, and his beliefs are transferred into his lyrics. References to God appear in several songs, though spiritual nods can also be far less specific. On "Cassolette" Cameron sings, "If every day/We think to pray/We can hide away."

"It''s misleading to think we''re all in agreement about what we stand for," Cameron says. "But we all agree life is a struggle. You help me, I''ll help you."

Christian rock is not a tag Cameron or the band wants, nor do they consider it accurate: it''s too exclusive, and it also isn''t representative of the band members'' varied belief systems. While Cameron is Christian, Higgins notes he is not.

"We try to keep our messages (focused) on positiveness and growth," Kenyon says. "We try to maintain a positive image and outlook," but, he adds, without preaching.

Musically, Easyco are similarly inclusive, with bandmates'' varied tastes finding progressive, emo, country and heavy rock infused into their songs. "River to Sunrise," which is on the new album, starts with a Rolling Stones-influenced riff that leads into metal-tinged rock and an eventual intersection with a lengthy jam; "Highland" puts the metal to the catchy funk-pop of Cake; "Cassolette" takes an open-ended, Dave Matthewsesque approach to country.

...Three-fourths of Easyco grew up in Tucson - [bassist Brock] Lange and the Hood brothers went to Rincon/University High School - with Cameron first picking up a guitar at age 14, Kenyon at 15. The brothers played together in high school, with Easyco evolving rather seamlessly.

"It hard to say how long we could keep this together. We''re all so different," Cameron says. "But this is where we are now. This is what is burning up."

"We definitely want to go for the betterment of people," Higgins says. "Right now the best way for me to do that is this band, because when it''s right, it''s right."
