Details:
There''s a gentle breeze blowing through the trees of Critton Hollow, a peaceful spot nestled in the hills of West Virginia. Come up the windy dirt drive from Critton Hollow Road and come into the home of Sam and Joe Herrmann, a cozy place with high ceillings and wood floors, they built themselves with the help of some friends. Pour yourself a cup of coffee, come on into the living room and make yourself comfortable. Joe Fallon has driven up from the neighboring town of Berkeley Springs and Paul Kovac has made the long haul from Chardon, Ohio. They''re all getting ready to do one of the things that they love most dearly in the world...making music togther. And that''s what this record is about.
The idea of making a record in their own home was suggested to them by Paul McDonald, a Cape Breton recording engineer and musician who they befriended while on a family trip to the Maritimes. Paul brought the recording gear and we set up two microphones. For four days we ate together; laughed together and made a bunch of good music together; right there in the living room.
Technically, this is called a "live recording." This approach really made sense. Whether it''s in a late night session or on a concert stage, to me the " live" sound of Critton Hollow String Band has always had incredible heart, spirit and an undeniable groove.
My hat is off as well to Billy Wolf, the mastering engineer, for his skill and good will in transforming our four days of enjoyable music making into a fine sounding and carefully assembled collection of live string band music.
So, kick off your shoes, pull up a chair and join us for an evening of merrymaking and music in the hills of West Viginia.
