THE CHEROKEE NATIONAL YOUTH CHOIR CELEBRATE A BANNER YEAR

2007 BRINGS MAJOR NATIONAL NOMINATIONS AND MACY’S DAY PARADE INVITATION FOR AMERICA’S TOP NATIVE YOUTH CHOIR

Nashville, TN (October 8, 2007) 2007 has been a banner year for The Cherokee National Youth Choir. Their fifth studio album, Comfort and Joy, has received several high-profile nominations, including a nod for “Best Gospel or Inspirational Recording” by the 9th Annual Native American Music Awards, and was also nominated in the category of “Best Spiritual Recording” by the 2007 Indian Summer Music Awards. Now, the group can add one more major accolade to their ever-expanding resume, as they have been invited to take part in the 2007 Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Parade in New York City. With an estimated television audience of over 44 million people, the parade will be the greatest exposure that the choir has received to date.
Since its inception in 2000, The Cherokee National Youth Choir has been invited to perform in many prestigious settings and events, including performances at the White House for President George W. Bush, the Kennedy Center, and The Smithsonian Institute, among others.
Understandably pleased, Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation states, “The Cherokee Nation is so proud of these young Cherokees. Every year the group becomes more and more popular and if you have ever heard them sing you know why. We are very excited and honored that these young people have been invited to take part in the Macy’s Day parade.”

The Cherokee National Youth Choir performs traditional Cherokee songs in the Cherokee language and is made up of Cherokee youth from across the Cherokee Nation. They are helping to further a cultural renaissance through their music and language skills, the mission envisioned for them by Principal Chief Smith. He established the Cherokee National Youth Choir to be “ambassadors” for the Cherokee Nation, and they function as an important symbol to the world, demonstrating that the Cherokee language and culture continue to thrive in modern society. Since its creation, the Cherokee National Youth Choir has developed a national presence, fortifying its position as the preeminent native language youth choir in America. In addition to their high-profile appearances, they have also recorded and performed with legendary talents, Rita Coolidge, and Dolly Parton.

“Mary Kay Henderson, the youth choir director and I are so excited that the youth choir will be able to take part in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” said Kathy Sierra, coordinator. “This is a real honor and we look forward to the opportunity to represent the Cherokee Nation at an event of this magnitude. I hope everyone tunes in to watch us!”
