D’ANthologie 1: Swords or Shields?
Released In Jewel Case with Hand-Signed/Embossed 12-Page Lyric Booklet.

In the cavernous fissures of alternative & progressive music insurgencies, the band name CITADEL may conjure up fervent opinions & staunch debates. Indisputable are the facts that Citadel co-founded the world''s first progressive music festival (ProgFest) & were the first band to ever have taken the stage at such a festival. How then could there be mixed feelings amongst the prog elite about a group synonymous with creating an event credited with birthing a worldwide movement of similar festivals? Maybe more importantly, does the elitists'' opinion really matter when stacked against the 30-year tenure the band has maintained ''forever indie'' with LP, CD, Tape, Book & DVD releases sold in 35 countries, crossing nearly every musical genre?

If the elite opinion matters at all, it is for one poignant point; their loose consensus that Citadel is not ''pure prog'', et al, -

Herein, the Citadel D''ANthologie series may corroborate such assertions - because Citadel is, if anything, ''anti-genre''. Of course, supporters argue that many Citadel songs ARE prog & Citadel''s style diversity is prog in ''spirit''. Prog purists often beg to differ. Citadel''s G. Whitman has been cited as remarking, "baloney, malarkey, nonsense, twaddle, hogwash, bunkum, humbug, hokum, hooey, gibberish" to such pomp. This is not genre exclusive music; it is a collection of Citadel songs featuring the Whitmans with Drummer/Producer, Dan Smart - get it? - D''ANthology? Whitman comments, "Citadel cannot be constrained to genre fetters - Citadel is a MUSIC band, so give it a rest already, style formats are a passing afterthought…"

And so with you now sufficiently prepared, we cautiously introduce Citadel D''Anthologie 1: Swords or Shields? Please note the variant CD song titles, amended to aid new listeners in choosing a desired Citadel style flavor, but beware, we assume no liability for any chances taken venturing outside one''s genre norm…take heed to the helpful hints…

Liner Notes:

Tech Specs: Basic tracks were recorded at RECW student sessions & submixed to ½ track reels. These analogues were then digitally ingested. Whitman added sound effects, vocals, keys, guitars, mandolin & various nuanced weirdnesses.

"What you hear on this CD is closer to how these tunes were originally envisioned" cites Whitman, "some of the Citadel standards like S.O.S. & Life are now further developed & the newer songs like Sermons End, Reaching Out, RUaWear & IIIWW are hopefully now able to wholly evoke the intended joy or fear, hope or admonition, empathy or censure, calm or chaos that the intense lyrical imagery warrants. They now feel more complete. For instance, the nuclear blast with a baby crying under the guitar lullaby in IIIWW makes my stomach crawl each time it plays, or the arrow hitting the target at the start of RUAwear?, or the subtle mandolin tracks - this effort should bring these Citadel songs to their rightful emotional manifestations."

Nestled in the fringe hills of the northern Appalachian forested landscape is a veiled sanctuary for sonic expansionists, technologists & inventors. A haven for those perplexed by a sometimes pondered paradox wherein centuries worth of musical soundscapes have been created out of only 12 musical notes of varying octaves & harmonic entanglements. Time signature tinkerers & tonal toymakers, melodic meddlers & maestros of muse, beat bakers & clef chefs - a utopia for those with insatiable compositional cravings, appetites for arpeggios, hunger for harmony & thirst for tempo. Some search all their lives for such a refuge, some drive by without even noticing.

Near Chillicothe, Ohio, in a ''side-of-the-road'' town called Massieville, you''ll find a market, a gas pump, a couple biker bars & a shop of mechanics working on cars, trucks, tractors & combines. You''ll have to know what you''re looking for if you want to discover the true treasure of the town - a state-of-the-art, full service suite of audio & video production studios dialed in as a ''school'', but not just any school. Joe Waters'' Recording Workshop was the first of its kind & to this day it stands as the premier establishment for training of our future entertainment engineering gurus & wizards. Through the benevolence of this asylum, the genre-busters, CITADEL®, are afforded the distinction as a ''house band'' for several seasons at the Workshop, & only by means of this good fortune are we able to bring these songs to you; learned, recorded & mixed in one night each... and each representing different musical styles with anti-commercial conceptual structures. As always, headphones are recommended to fully enjoy this album featuring the Whitmans with Drummer and Mix madman, Dan Smart, on CITADEL D''ANthologie Volume One. Enjoy!

I. SERMON’S END (Smart Mix)

At the sermon''s end the doors are opened
and the words of God are done
There is fire falling from the heavens as the frightened faithful run

Take heed to the messages of the ages

There are masses, many screaming masses, the highest class now shunned
Sinners, saints and holy children saw destruction of the sun
All is darkness, all is fire, all is now at end
No more living, no desires, no more wounds have time to mend

At the sermon''s end

Hear, a warning to those so brave
Nothing sacred?
Nothing saved!
If in sin you find a friend
Make your way to a baneful end

At the sermon''s end

II. AFTER THE IIIWW (Smart Mix)

Fortunes gone and legends passed
Locked inside, your soul caresses
emotions felt but not revealed
Hearts are hungry but lips are sealed

Come look past the third world war
Hear the screams behind the door
Restless passion evermore
sealed beneath with freedom''s roar
Telling you what wrongs were done
Showing you the covered sun

Mutants pass with eyes of fire
Motions insist submerged desire
Bearing flasks of decaying dead
Traitors burned and satan fed

Slaves that kneel with involution
Receiving charge of restitution
Building back what man destroyed
Chained to this forbidden void

(Chorus)

Radiation takes its toll on melted beings
with brainwashed souls
Ageless shapes seep from swampy fosse
Remains of perfection forever lost

III. RUAWEAR? (Smart Mix)

Seems as though there''s moments
when there''s no one there to share
Life is only open to the ones who are aware
To the ones who are aware
Are you aware?

Some find situations
when there''s no one there to know
Open up your heart and let your feel for friendship show
Find someone to know, find someone to know

When You Seek What You''re Sending
You Know You''ll Have What You Need

A - Is for the Action that we need to change the scene
W - For Wanting Words Which Work With What We mean
A - Again allows us to Accentuate our style
R - Is for our Reason Reaching out to share a smile
E - Is for Emotion

When You Know What You''re Here For
Extending An Open Hand
When You Feel What You Go For
How Can You Help But Make A Stand?

Inside of your mind
Fear not what you may find
Raise your confidence
Gain experience
Seek the positive
Share the awareness
Avoid the careless
Strengthen your faith
Gather fresh breath
And when you awake
Stand strong on your ground
Fix what you break
Share what you''ve found

Seems as though there''s moments
ticking out of our control
Paradise awaits those who take heart in helping souls
Show you care by growing old
Life is only ours to hold

PERFORMED BY CITADEL
Drums & Tape FX - Dan Smart
Acoustic Guitar & Vocals - K. Whitman

IV. LIFE (Smart Mix)

When you look at the ocean.
Or when your face shows the things that you can''t say
You''re simply slave to emotion
It''s up to you to feel the things that you play

Life has never been easy
Yet it''s not ours to take it away
And when you look for the real things
I''m sure you''ll find it easier to stay

LIFE - it doesn''t have to be so easy
TRY - it doesn''t have to take forever
LIFE - it doesn''t have to be so easy
I know it''s always now or never
when you''re following dreams

What you''re feeling inside
You feel that you can''t let it be seen
You always thought that the stars were alive
But everyone''s telling you it''s just a dream

Innocently you hide
And they tell you to live life the ''normal way''
But you''ve had a glimpse of the other side
And that''s the way you feel it should stay

(Chorus)

When you look at the ocean and when your face shows the things that you can''t say
You''re simply slave to emotion
And it''s up to you to live life your own way

(Chorus)

V. DUNGEONS (Smart Mix)

I have seen the faces of eyes
that have turned to walk away
A trembling hand upon the hilt
and skies of blue turn a dismal gray
Many feet in a foreign land
and many banners raised
This I''ve seen and shall see again
Let the faults of mankind not be praised!

Away from the dungeons where the fire falls like rain
And how many lives are spent in a mask of flaming pain?
In need of a reason they shall stain the sinner''s sword
In futile hopes of gaining a crown as the just reward

Tears are shed over brother''s lost
and half a man never feels the same
The hands still clean of the men
behind the scenes of satan''s games
I have seen the faces of those
who''ll never really walk away
Empty stares,
a bleeding heart
and vengeance stored ''till the final day!

(Chorus)

PERFORMED BY CITADEL
Drums & Tape FX - Dan Smart
Bass, Vocals - K. Whitman
Keys, Pedals, Bells, Guitars, Vocals, Sound FX & Foley - G. Whitman

VI. LOTHLORIEN (Smart Mix)

I''m sitting here
Without a care for life
Alone, Lost, In Despair
I need the golden leaves of home
Please lead me there
To find the peace of mind
The flowing Nimrodel
I feel like half my life''s been spent in hell!

How do you fare, Lothlorien?
I shall be there when this fire swallows the things I love
No more nightmares, Lothlorien
Will I know where to look for you amongst the untrue?

At last on my way, the Dark Force has covered up the day
I''ve heard them say, Sauron has brought decay to you
This can''t be true?

How do you fare, Lothlorien?
I shall be there when this fire swallows the things I love
No more nightdares, Lothlorien
Will I know where to look for you amongst the untrue?

(Sneak - Break – Kick – Instrumental Sections)

VII. REACHING OUT (Smart Mix)

Reaching out across the ocean borne by wings of fright
We want to touch the many nations falling into the night

Can we find a way to open aging eyes?
Who revel as they rape the mountainsides
Hiding at the hint of stormy skies
Pillage and plunder with all their might
but falling into the night

Reaching out for true emotion once bottled inside
We stumble upon new frustrations hoping to see the light

Can we find a way to shield the child''s eyes
Who revel as they reach into a mind
Fearing naught but fear and guilt and lies
Honesty and wholeness bring their delight
and living inside the light

Reaching out for deep devotion
Open out your mind
Moving memories making motion
Guiding you to the light

PERFORMED BY CITADEL
Drums & Tape FX - Dan Smart
Acoustic Guitar & Vocals - K. Whitman
Pedals, Mando, Guitars, Vocals, Sound FX & Foley - G. Whitman

VIII. STANDING ALONE (Smart Mix)

Standing alone
a voice is calling me to roam
Whether to wander away from my home

It''s never easy to stand alone...

On the verge of losing reason
Lost reality
Like the changing of the seasons
Seeking Harmony
On the edge of broken mornings
Gaining sanity
Overlooking scattered warnings
Again it''s only me - Again, it''s only me

Standing alone
A voice is calling me back home
Always I ponder, always to roam

It''s never easy to stand alone...

Drums, Backing Vocals & Tape FX - Dan Smart
Bass, Vocals - K. Whitman
Keys, Guitars, Bass, Vocals, Sound FX & Foley - G. Whitman

IX. SILENCE OF SURRENDER (S.O.S.) (Smart Mix)

Is there nothing we can do for the stranger?
Is there nothing that society will allow?
In a world alone, he''s standing by the window,
in a haven grey with dark and gnarled boughs.
Is there nothing we can borrow from the lonesome?
Is there a lesson to be learned from those who cry?
In a world that seems to bow before the hammer
slamming hard upon the crosses in the sky.

Many Days Spent In Sadness
by those who''ve tried to change "the way things are"
THE SILENCE OF SURRENDER!
"There''s no room for the restless,
there is no room for changing,
we''re sorry but we''re asked
to make the Dreemurz sleep outside"

Many Nights Bathed In Yellow Light
Sane Shoulders Sagging beneath the watching stars
There''s no room for the Dreemurz?
There is no room for Freedom?
A moral never reached becomes the food for those who lie!

Is there something in the eyes of those who''re leading,
that they cannot see the coming of a new dawn?
Is there nothing we can do to stop the bleeding,
soon enough before the battle carries on?
Is there anything remains considered sacred?
Is there naught above the level of desire?
Have we strength enough to break the building bridges
that give access to the reign of spreading fire?

Many Minds Lost In Sadness
a vain attempt to change "the way things are"
THE SILENCE OF SURRENDER!
"There''s no room for the restless,
there is no room for changing,
we''re sorry but we''re asked
to make the Dreemurz sleep outside"

Many Eyes Shining Firelight With Envy
Flaming Bright, of those who wish on stars
There''s no room for the Dreemurz?
There is no room for Freedom?
A moral never reached becomes the food for those who lie!

Spoken Dialogue:
"Lie, are you calling me a liar? I tell you boy, believe me, there''s no use in following dreams. "Normal" people don''t dream, don''t you wanna be normal boy? And another thing, you''ve got to quit condemning society! Why can''t you write about something that we can all understand? There''s no money in being different boy, no money in it at all, NEVER!"

Have we time enough to gather up our senses?
Have we strength enough to fight for what we feel?
Will we run ahead to challenge what we''re fearing,
or shall we wait for the future will reveal?
Is there nothing we can do for the stranger?
Is there nothing that society will allow?
Shall the gifted just remain beside the window,
to cry loud to those who''d hear but don''t know how?

Many Hearts Drowned in Sadness,
Remorse and Desolate
toward the way things are
THE SILENCE OF SURRENDER!
"There''s no room for the restless,
there is no room for changing,
we''re sorry but we''re asked
to make the Dreemurz sleep outside"

Many Hands Stored In
Pockets Of Woe and Aging
Silent beneath the watching stars
There''s no room for the Dreemurz?
There is no room for Freedom?
A moral never reached is one more reason not to die!

Is there nothing we can do for the stranger?
Is there nothing that society will allow?
In a world alone she''s standing by the window,
in a haven grey with dark and gnarled boughs.
Is there nothing we can do for the stranger,
have we strength enough to fight for what we feel,
or shall we wait for what the future will reveal?

X. PREY TO DESTINY (Smart Mix)

I just can''t find my way, again it''s another day
I don''t think I''m gonna make it alone
I''m on the doorstep but there''s nobody home
It''s such an endless tour,
and of the future we can never be sure
There''s many things that we''ll never know
Our heart''s on fire but the face doesn''t show the pain
No I can''t see the day when things will ever go the ''right'' way
But Lord knows that you gotta be strong,
You gotta keep on movin'' along
I''m prey to destiny, though I don''t wanna be

Alone again it seems, so many reaching short of dreams
You know that time will hold the things you desire
Just to see how long you''ll kindle the fire
So hard to feel my way,
with the questions changing every day
There''s many wonders that we''ll never see
The hands are laboring when the heart should be free to roam

No I can''t see the day
when things will ever go the ''right'' way
But Lord knows I know how to be strong,
I''m gonna keep on movin'' along
You can blame the end on destiny,
but that I refuse to see
''Cause God knows how to help us be strong,
he''s gonna keep us movin'' along

Time never stands still for wishers
Fate has a hand in the deal
Those who sleep their lives away
never see the stars in the sky
Some fall and pray to destiny, though I won''t kneel
For something I don''t feel

Time never stands still for wishers
Fate has a hand in the deal
Those who work their lives away
never see the stars in their own eyes
Some fallen prey to destiny, though I won''t kneel
