Details:
David Burkhart (Mahpiya Ska or White Skies), is of Cree/Lakota descent. In the late nineteen-nineties David was researching his family history when he found his relation to a Thomas Cooke Johnstone who was a justice seated on the Supreme Court in Canada (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan) and based on court records (cir 1880s) awarded the Metis and related tribes with over 600,000 acres, reversing a previous ruling. This helped the native people so much that the tribal chief had promised to look over the judges descendants through all eternity (this statement was shared with David by his mother, after he had found the information on his great grandfather). The judge made these decisions just prior to his retirement. The Justice had lost his wife, Amelia to pneumonia and became close to his care-taker of some 20 years, an unnamed woman of Cree / Lakota decent. (This research is still in progress.)

Prior to this, and inspired by repetitive dreams of a Native American nature, David, known to his friends as Cloud began to play the Native American flute (Lakota and Dakota Style) as if over night. David says that when he plays, it feels as though someone else plays through him and has recorded three formal music CDs. This “trilogy” has been produced using only indigenous instruments (flute, drum, rattles, and bells). The first CD in the trilogy is “Ancient Voices”, recorded in an ancient ceremonial kiva in Manitou Springs, Colorado – inspired by traditional spiritual ceremonies. The second of the trilogy is “Ina Maka” (Mother Earth in Lakota), this collection of music was recorded at an undisclosed site of a ruin covered in ancient petriglyphs.

The last CD of the series, Mahpiya Ate (Father Sky in Lakota) is due to be released at the Winter Solstice Celebration at Four Crows Center in Tustin, California fund raiser for the Native American Institute on December 22nd, 2007, Mahpiya A''te was prepared and recorded throughout a pilgrimage David took with his soul-mate Belle (Menominee tribe) to the Medicine Wheel in north central Wyoming, the burial at Wounded Knee, his trip to the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations, and time spent in the Black Hills, South Dakota – and Devils Tower national monument in Wyoming. Ina Maka and Mahpiya Ate also have music videos that will be available for download at a later date.

Cloud and his soul-mate Belle live in Sedona, Arizona today, where they work to raise the knowledge and awareness of the community on Native American values, beliefs, folklore and music.
