In addition to composing and recording these original melodies for his granddaughter, Rylee, James Spalink also made the replica wire-strung ancient Irish harp that was used in this recording. The melodies are simple and sort of bittersweet, and contain many references to people and places that he loves where he lives in Michigan .He says in the liner notes: “The ancient celts believed that the harp had three magical powers: The power to bring laghter, to bring tears, and to bring sleep. The latter made it the perfect choice of instruments for recording a collection of lullabies for my grand daughter, Rylee….As artistic endeavors often do, this project took on a life of it’s own, and I found myself to be more a follower than a leader….early on began to sound different from what would be considered a typical lullaby. It is, nonetheless quite relaxing and will probably help conjure sleep for infants and adults as well.”
