MP3 Nicol Lischka - Back Porch Light

Sometimes a sorcerer, sometimes a summer rain, her voice rides the swells of electric slide and acoustic verve. This album mulls over all the things that can nearly make you blind—love and lust, honesty and betrayal, coming home.

Details:
With much-appreciated assistance of a sizable grant from a local Saskatoon radio station, Nicol Lischka has ended a seven-year hiatus. Recorded a few hours from her home with producer Jason Forrest Plumb, "Back Porch Light" includes nine original songs and one cover song and is set for release in January 2008.

“I have definitely come through a difficult chapter in my life,” says Lischka. “And then, one week after we finished in the studio, I received news that my Dad had passed away. I wasn’t ready for that to happen. He was my biggest supporter and always knew what to say.”

Lischka decided to press on with Back Porch Light in her Dad''s memory. He was the one who introduced her to music. He began teaching her the accordion when she turned 11 and encouraged her to perform at school recitals and community events. Later, when attending an all-girls school in Prince Albert, Lischka’s musical influences were forcibly widened by the school’s mandatory choir practice. This was a pinnacle moment: “I remember standing in the fifth row on the stairs in the Rivier Academy auditorium with 320 other teenage girls in diamond-checkered fortrel skirts singing the "Hallelujah Chorus" and wondering if music made other people feel high.”

Lischka’s debut album, produced by acclaimed Californian producer Scott Matthews, was well received in Canada including enthusiastic support from PromoFact, VideoFact, FACTOR and the Saskatchewan Arts Board. It was also nominated for two Prairie Music Awards, while the video “Nobody Finds Me” was nominated for a Saskatchewan Showcase Award. Canadian publicist Richard Flohil praised Lischka''s work as "fresh, imaginative, literate and appealing...…an artist with gifts that deserve support.”

With a tour out west planned for early 2008, Lischka will once again work with members of The Willing, some of whom play on Back Porch Light. “It is important for me to work with musicians who are not only great players, but also good people. I think that becomes part of the fibre of the recording and the charisma of the songs." Back Porch Light features Jason Plumb on electric guitar (like you''ve never heard Jason play before), harmonica & banjo, and local favourites such as Gord Smith on bass, Mike Thompson on drums, Jeff McLeod on keys & accordion, and Scott Patrick on electric.
