Ed Bolaños

Ed Bolaños ideas (we call them songs) are heartfelt and spiritual all at once. His "ideas" are universal, his thoughts communicate a shared understanding and his dreams express our collective experiences. "I write about people, places, and experiences that I''m familiar with. I''m not that different from the next person and we all go through the same motions; whether it be about life, about love, about loss, and just the day to day struggles. The bottom line is that I think somehow we''re all connected". This connection is the reason why Ed''s music, as well as the emotions which he expresses so beautifully in his "ideas" , have resonated with so many people throughout the years.
Ed Bolaños was born in Guatemala (Central America) but his family moved to the U.S. ( Port Chester, New York) when he was 6 years old. "I love the fact that I''ve always lived 20 minutes from the capital of the world, New York City, and I''m lucky to also be able to go back to the Eternal Spring that is Guatemala. My great, great grandfather from my fathers'' side, migrated from Italy, passed through Ellis Island, and ended up in Guatemala. He must have known of its beauty and spirituality".
Try to define Ed''s music. Not an easy task. It''s a bit of everything and nothing. "Ever since I could remember, music has always been a part of my life. My father would play all types of music in the house. He would go from John Lennon solo, to Beatles records, and follow it up with the Bee Gees, Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, and The Eagles. I don''t know who exactly my influences are, but I''m sure all the music that I was exposed to while growing up play a part in what I do. As I got older I found myself drawn to a lot of British music, old and new. I''ve always been a sucker for a good melody and to me a lot of the British bands have that. I started putting words together when I was about 13 or 14, but I didn''t start playing guitar until I was about 16. I took some lessons, learned some chords, and then I started writing my own ideas. It felt natural for me to put words and melodies together. To this day, I don''t really know how to play many cover songs because I just wrote my own things from the start".
"I started playing in my first band when I was in high school. We cut a demo and from that demo, we caught a little buzz. We met some guy that liked the music and he had a friend in Soho, NYC with a professional recording studio. Anyhow, we got in to the studio and started recording new material. That was my first time recording in a real professional studio and on 2 inch tape. The engineer we were working with loved the music and took us under his wing. He was certain that he could get us a deal because he had a lot of friends in the business and he believed the matreial was good enough. Unfortunately, the outcome was different. The band broke up towards the end of the sessions and we didn''t get signed. That was my introduction to the music business. I didn''t pick up my guitar for about 3 months after that experience. After recovering from that situation, I started to write again".
" I first met Mike Tocci around the time I was recording in the city. While I was filling out an application at the place where he worked, he overheard me talking about music. He asked me if I played, I said yes, and he told me that he also played and then he gave me the job. He offered to record me on his 4 track and that was the beginning of me working with Mike (2 time grammy nominee). This was around 1991. In the years that followed, we would get together every once in a while and record new material but it was tough because Mike landed a gig working as an engineer at Electric Lady Studios (Jimmy Hendrix place) and he was always there. I actually got a chance to record a few tracks at Electric Lady with Mike and the vibe was amazing". It''s funny because with every new recording that we did together, our craft improved. We started recording again in 2002 and those sessions eventually led to this album. We basically scrapped half an albums'' worth of material because we both knew that those tracks were not up to our standards. So fast forward to now, and these 10 tracks on "About Life" are what Ed Bolaños is truly about. Mike is the only person that I''ve worked with musically that gets me and my ideas and I hope that it shows through the music. If it wasn''t for Mike Tocci (2 time grammy nominee) this record would not be nor sound the way it does".
When listening to Ed''s music, you know he''s been doing this for a while and yet he says this is just the beginning. "I''ve been through some ups and downs in my life, both musically and personally, but the most important thing is that I''m still here. I''m still doing what I love to do, and that is making music. I had a spiritual awakening in 2000 and my life has been great ever since. Everything in the past has led to the present and I''m happy. After all, the only thing real is today and so I''ll worry about tomorrow when tomorrow comes".
