Details:
Tracy Spuehler writes deceptively simple indie-pop songs that are refreshingly pure and direct. Her sweet-smart songwriting has been beloved by in-the-know tastemakers, DJs and critics since the release of her debut album, “six three one,” in 2001. KCRW listeners already adored the delicious lilt of “Where Do We Go?” long before it charmed the nation through a major Nissan TV campaign.

Both “six three one” and its follow-up, “It’s the Sound” (’04) received heavy independent radio support, landing in CMJ’s top 200 and KCRW’s top 50 charts. Both albums have also found major placements in TV (including Weeds, Men In Trees, What About Brian, Joan of Arcadia, Life As We Know It, Laguna Beach) and in film (Mozart and the Whale, Love Thy Neighbor).

In 2005, Tracy was nominated for the LA Weekly’s Best Singer-Songwriter Award, and critics nationwide fell for her “organic, airy quality” (American Songwriter) and “sweet, sensitive songs” (Village Voice); her “bursts of wit and sweetness tempered by dollops of sobering reality” (Los Angeles Times) and "writing so unobtrusive, she is able to evoke profound depth of feeling through little more than subtle suggestion" (Paste Magazine). Maybe Miles of Music put it best, calling Tracy “Simply lovable.”

Tracy’s writing is a clear reflection of her own life: “six three one” was an album of painful losses — of her mother, her home, her lover, and even her car. “It’s the Sound” was “my L.A. dating album.” Tracy’s newest release, “You’re My Star,” documents her life as a joyful newlywed — and first-time expectant mom! In fact, nearly every song was written while Tracy was carrying her first child. “Jones” is an in-utero tribute to that little boy. Recorded in Chicago with longtime producer Liam Davis, “You’re My Star” is by far Tracy’s most swooning, love-happy album to date. It’s also her best.

Tracy has been compared to Juliana Hatfield, Aimee Mann, Liz Phair, Lisa Loeb and even Sheryl Crow, but none of these is quite right. Tracy is Tracy, and to know her is to love her. As Derek Sivers, president of CD Baby, says: “Imagine a messy, chaotic world filled with junkyards and media billboards, all shouting noise, hype, and clutter. Now imagine in the middle of this mess is a little oasis, a little perfect circle with a single simple beam of light shining down on a girl singing a simple melody. That''s Tracy Spuehler.”
