The Beginning History of AFAR Musicians

Tributaries: The initial sources of the AFAR Musicians comes from the 1980’s as codependency concepts merged with the addiction research of Dr. Patrick Carnes.

History now records that the decade of the 1990’s witnessed an unfolding interrelationship of circumstances for the initial blending of addiction research and psychotherapeutic healing within Nashville, TN. Some of Nashville’s music communtiy participated in this psychotherapeutic healing process as offered by Life Management Center, Inc. Through diverse LMC psychotherapueutic group experiences, several talented musicians began to recognize their common passion for recovery. Assisted by layers of personal healing, several musicians began merging their new emotional health into their song writing professions. Various songs of recovery and the recovery journey came to be heard in Nashville.

In 2000, the documentation of the American Foundation for Addiction Research (AFAR), was received and distributed by Max and Kathleen Haskett to many of their Life Management Center clients. Some musicians asked if they could help AFAR some way. The encouraging response from AFAR was to create the AFAR Musicians, who first performed at the Radio Café in Nashville on June 21, 2001 for the renowned writer, speaker and therapist, Dr. Patrick Carnes. He was impressed enough to take us on the road with him. Through AFAR and the support of the Nashville music community, the CD “Voices from AFAR” was produced within a few short months.

Since that first show in Nashville, we have played all over America to appreciative audiences both in and out of recovery. It has been our goal to share our experiences in recovery through our music, but not limit its commercial appeal. We hope that our music will not only help and encourage people, but that they will be thoroughly entertained by it.

Paul Jefferson moved to Nashville in 1993. Shortly thereafter, he became the first country artist to sign with the then-new record label, ALMO Sounds and began touring with such artists as Trisha Yearwood and Dwight Yoakam. The [Nashville] Tennessean named Jefferson one of the Top 5 artists most likely to achieve stardom. He wrote the No. 1 hit, “That’s As Close As I’ll Get To Loving You” for Aaron Tippin. His own critically acclaimed singles include “Check Please” and “I Might Just Make It.” To support his ALMO Sounds release, Jefferson formed a band, which was managed by international talent impresario Miles Copeland. During a songwriting retreat at Copeland’s castle in France, Jefferson met Porter Howell. The two are now recording their second album together. Paul also is a producer and sound engineer. He is currently working on the new AFAR projects. https://www.tradebit.com
