Eerkan...MC to Entrepreneur

There are those of us born and raised in the area, those who are transplants from other parts of Carolina and those who have moved to the area from other states. This is the story begins in Newport News, (Bad News) VA. At the local park, this slim kid with a high top fade begins showing up just outside the cipher. He spends most of his time peeping young cats break dancing, while others kick their little s rhymes. Stripe Lee''s and name belts are the fashion of the day. Before Hip-hop stepped to the forefront of popular music, before young brothers began inking record deals.

I could never really break or pop so I started rhyming. The first crew I was a part of was PHD, comprised of myself and "The Bean". We used to rock then was a lot freer flowing, dudes was waiting for Hip-hop to die. Getting a record deal wasn''t as tangible as it is now, we rocked for fun and I feel on the whole, hip hop was better for it. Cats headed off to college. During this time I was without a crew, so my emphasis was becoming the best MC, still battling MCs in the park but now I''m recognized more often for tearing heads off the mic. Cats were doing a gang of freestyling, and the art of dejaying was what was going on.
Nobody had loot for a real drum machine, so a deejay was a major element of every crew. I ended up going to VCU where I hooked up with DJ Splash, this brother from Connecticut with a complete setup, mic and tables plus a spot to sit down and build an the music.. He used to let me come by and rock my songs on the tape, furthering my style.

Richmond at this time was popping, I had started a new crew Nabasi with some brothers from VCU, Mad Skillz used to be were developing his style. Das EFX was over at Virginia State and had just gotten a thing going with Eric Sermon and there brothers over at Virginia Union with skills as well. This was time around the cats really got into making beats, copping the SP-1200 and putting together promos, demos, and completes songs. The scene was hot but, I''d been in Richmond for a minute, and I was fiending a change, so I bounced down 85 to Raleigh. I hooked back up with my partner Bean from PHD, and Knotty one of his boys from Raleigh and Flim Flam. When I''d gotten to Raleigh, there were a lot of groups linking up, attempting to get deals, most of it centered around St. Augustine''s, where cats were in schools or there to pick up some women. Ain''t nobody have loot, so our motto was "fresh gear and bologna sandwiches". We used to rolled to State and UNC on some next- level pimp novice sh*t.

Treez of a Different Soil was formed because all our rhymes were distinct and we all stood on different soil. We did shows at Kamikaze and Club DYH in Greensboro and anywhere else that would let us do our thing. During this period, more cats had drum machine but, nobody was willing to do tracks at a reasonable price. This is the same problem that keeps talent here in Carolina as opposed to doing nationally but, I ain''t hating. Anyway, we ended up going to VA Beach for our studio sessions. We recorded "Squirrels is Comin'' for My Nutz" which was hot but, didn''t get much airplay. The Project never went anywhere but we got on "Rap City" appearing with Yaggfu and from the juice we got from our live shows, I was thinking we would get a deal, no cigar homeboy. The Treez never really disbanded, we had life issues.
