Elizabeth Cooney commenced her musical studies at the Cork School of Music with Adrian Petcu. Having won all the major prizes and competitions in Ireland, including the String Final of the RTE Millennium Musician of the Future Competition, she received a scholarship to study with Itzhak Rashkovsky at the Royal College of Music, London. While there, Elizabeth won the Seymour Whinyates Prize for Strings, the Ian Stoutzker Prize for Violin and the Bernard Stevens Prize for Chamber Music. She received the highest mark in her year for her undergraduate finals, and gained the highest mark ever awarded at the RCM in her postgraduate Final Recital: 98%

Elizabeth is currently the Phoebe Benham Junior Fellow at the RCM. Recent prizes include the Lorna Violin Memorial Prize for an & Outstanding Competitor from Overseas& and the & Society of Women Musicians Award & at the Royal Overseas League Competition.

As a concerto soloist, Elizabeth has performed with the NSO of Ireland, RTE Concert Orchestra, Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Royal College of Music Symphony Orchestra and Musica Vitae, with conductors such as Paavo Jarvi, Colman Pierce, Alexander Annissimov, Proinsius O Duinn and Maestro Shlomo Mintz. .

In August 2002, Elizabeth was awarded second prize and the audience prize at the Sion-Valais International Competition for Violin in Switzerland, and in addition won the award for best interpretation of the compulsory piece in the competition. She performed Prokofiev''s First Violin Concerto in Victoria Hall, Geneva with the Slovenian Philharmonic as part of the final concert in the competition. She has since been invited back to Switzerland to perform and record Vivaldi concerti with the Liszt Chamber Orchestra of Hungary and Shlomo Mintz.

Recent concerto appearances include the Sibelius Concerto in Bulgaria at this years Katya Popova Festival, the Tchaikovsky at St. Johns Smith Square and Mozart No.5 at the NCH with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland to great critical acclaim.

Elizabeth is also a keen recitalist and chamber musician. She is the violinist of the Sans Souci Piano Trio, which recently performed at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival, and has broadcast for BBC Radio 3 and Lyric FM. She made her Royal Festival Hall debut in November 2002 and has recently given recitals at the Brighton Festival, St. Martin in the Fields and St. James''s Piccadilly.

Recent engagements include a recital at the Wigmore Hall, Sibelius Concerto with the Phoenix Orchestra at St. John''s Smith Square, Lalo''s Symphonie Espagnole with the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland and a recital tour of Ireland in 2005. Elizabeth was recently invited to perform in a concert for the legendary conductor, Kurt Masur for the occasion of his receiving an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Music London.

Elizabeth plays on a Nicolaus Gagliano violin on loan to her from the Royal College of Music.
