I pursue the idea that art- visual arts, music, dance, theater, literature- is critically important to human culture and history, and it needs to be acknowledged, appreciated and absorbed. To me, being a visual artist is about skill, originality, and being relaxed and open enough to tap into the collective unconscious.

Ultimately, being an artist is about making people feel. They might feel happy, confused, moved, angry, weird, shocked, compelled, etc. Art that elicits emotion is successful art. The artist who creates successful art expresses herself/himself with emotion, and that feeling comes through and touches those who experience the art.

When Gombrich said there is no Art- he was referring to the modern world''s definition of art with a capital "A." I find the statement liberating. Art with a small "a" is open to interpretation. Its limitless qualities can be contained only by the human mind. Great artists will break beyond the confines of what has been done before them; they will surpass their masters.

In today''s society and culture, we are bombarded with the mass-produced and disposable. This is why I believe it is important for people who enjoy visual art to possess originals. Owning a print or a poster just isn''t as powerful. Original works embody soul. They are one of a kind- created personally by the artist during a specific time in his/her life. If a piece moves you and you have the ability to acquire it, it will enrich your life. You have furthered the cause of creativity and originality, you have helped support an artist, and you own something that is duplicated by no one else in the world!

Philosophically, my current work strives to make connections, to represent the experience of being alive and aware, of living as a sentient being in a physical body. I try to capture this idea through expression, gesture and body language then articulate it further via imagery, color, transparency and light. Creating facial expressions and hand gestures interests me as much as the stately stance of a horse or the perfect lines in a hieroglyph. Generally, figures - human or animal, symbology and metaphorical allusion are present in my work.

Physically, I delight in experimenting with composition. I layer my paintings to achieve a final composition that appeals to me. No painting is sacred; they may all come under the brush if I feel I have not found the perfect balance. I value energetic brushstrokes, layering and vibrant color. I strive to obtain a rich and lively palette.
