Covering a vast musical territory, backed by a big and soulful sound, John McKinstry’s debut solo effort Goliath Falling delivers an emotional impact.
Toronto, Canada based singer-songwriter McKinstry provides a unique and invigorating mix of rock, soul, R&B, and reggae, with flavours from afro-pop to folk thrown in.
His strong melodies and poetic lyrics are complimented by a large powerhouse band of top Toronto musicians. An earthy rhythm section, rich layered guitars, a full horn section, all contribute to the rich, honest, straight-up delivery on Goliath Falling.
The songs were written on McKinstry’s recent two-year walkabout, including his prolonged stay in southern Africa, which greatly affected his musical approach. They range from straight up power pop to reggae flavours, from upbeat soul vibes to plaintive guitar and voice.
McKinstry gives a sense of urgency as the music cuts through a wide swath of musical styles, merging it all into a cohesive sound; a sound best described as a mix of Van Morrison, some Memphis soul, some old-skool reggae like The Congos, plus countless other organic influences.
Goliath Falling definitely gives you something to wrap your ears and mind around, but more importantly, the songs move you emotionally. At the heart of it John McKinstry is a performer who delivers his lyrics and his melodies honestly...something to treasure in this age of disposable pop.
