MP3 The Late Joys - A Pretty Little One

Fun and feisty music to jangle the nerves and tickle the tendons with (mostly) up-tempo post-punk and Brit-pop influenced, Rickenbacker-n-keyboards-laced confections, with literate lyrics, catchy melodies and left-leaning political sensibilities.

Details:
The Late Joys were formed to perform as the "house band" in a play about working-class life in 1930s Lancashire, England. The play was titled, "The Road To Wigan Pier: A (Socialist) Tea-Time Travelogue & Historical Musical Revue." Playwright, song writer and egomaniacal frontman, Robi Polgar, wanted the combo to perform live to help keep things energetically tuneful during his rather successfully received play (honestly).

The play was a hugely funny romp about dire living conditions, terrible diets and the nasty minutiae of the lives of the Lancashire families who lived off of their men-folk''s working down English coal mines during the Depression. Fun fun fun. No, really. The music served as an upbeat, editorial counterpoint to the bleak story line, and theatre goers professed to having enjoyed themselves. What a start. Mr. P wrote the songs, which ranged from the murderously folksy to the poppily Beatles-esque-ly. A harbinger of things to come out of the coal dust of things past-y. A right good knees-up was had by all.

The original lineup underwent some major changes over the following biennial and, in the summer of 2006, The Late Joys re-emerged as a rockin'' trio featuring Polgar on guitar and vocals, Patrick Lopez on bass and Rex Rizk on drums. They are aided and abetted most of the time (including this CD) by keyboardist Stephan Jessin. Thus far, the neverending story reads rather like every other Austin, Texas band''s nascence, except with a more high-falutin'' vocabulary and that bit where a collection of NFL-issue hard-bodies roamed one of our gigs all potty-mouthed with (real) guns tucked in their waistbands seeking solace in group hugs.

Surf to the band''s websites for individual bios, photos and more. Write to us; we''d love to hear from you!

About this CD: "A Pretty Little One"

As with any worthwhile endeavor, this little one took some time getting here. We began recording in September and mixed and mastered into the new year. The whole shebang was done at Alta Vista Recording, in Austin, Texas, with the help of Tom Johnson and Colin McDonald. The cover art is by Rita Shumaker.
