¿Trajiste la guitarra? (Did you bring the guitar?)
After living in the United States for 20 years (18 of them in Los Angeles), in 2005, Lucio Arce returned to live in Argentina. Many thought him crazy, but after the release of his first album, Tangos Inesperados (Unexpected Tangos, 2002), he believed that going back to the source was a necessary step for him and his music. The result of that journey is ¿Trajiste la guitarra? (Did You Bring the Guitar?), his second album, a surprising and original collection of 17 tangos, waltzes and milongas.
Lucio Arce’s tangos distill his fine ability for observation. Each character, each detail of the day-to-day, build a story through his poetry, taking us back to the great authors of the 30’s and 40’s. Lucio uses traditional musical genres to tell stories that describe Argentina today. A father expecting to save himself when his 12 year old son hits it big in professional soccer. A witness that knows that his time has come. A delivery boy who dies trying. The price of groceries. Everything in three or four minute micro-narrations displaying precise strokes and an enviable ability for narrative synthesis.
Sebastian Luna’s arrangements and artistic production provide a beautiful frame for each story. Los del Zaguan is a trio of Argentine guitars ( Luna, Jorge “el Gaucho” Gayoso and Federico Pecchia) on the Gardel-Corsini-Magaldi tradition, after being filtered by influences like Roberto Grela, Anibal Troilo, Astor Piazzolla and Django Reinhardt among others. Guests artists contribute with different textures embellishing the final product: legendary bandoneonist Ernesto Baffa, Pablo Agri (violin), Raul Miño (accordion), Nestor Basurto (vocal and guitar) and the voices of Daniel Melingo, Cristobal Repetto, Martin Alvarado, and Rafael Rojas, in a memorable tribute performance to the great Carlos Gardel. If you are one of those who says “I don’t like tango”, ¿Trajiste la guitarra? might be a happy exception to the rule, in a music genre whose repertoire has been and is endlessly repeated.

Los tangos de Lucio Arce responden a una capacidad fina de observación. Cada personaje, cada detalle de lo cotidiano, construyen una historia a través de su poética, que remite a los grandes autores de los 30’ y los 40’. Lucio utiliza géneros tradicionales para contar historias de personajes y situaciones que describen la Argentina de hoy. Un padre que espera salvarse cuando su hijo triunfe en el fútbol. Un testigo que sabe que le llegó la hora. Un repartidor de empanadas que muere en el intento. El precio de las verduras. Todo en micro-relatos de tres o cuatro minutos que despliegan pinceladas certeras y una envidiable capacidad de síntesis narrativa.
Los arreglos y producción artística de Sebastián Luna proveen un hermoso marco sonoro que exalta los textos. Los del Zaguán es un trío de guitarras criollas (el mencionado Luna, Jorge “el Gaucho” Gayoso y Federico Pecchia) a lo Gardel-Corsini-Magaldi, pasadas por un tamiz de influencias entre las que pueden escucharse a Roberto Grela, Troilo, Piazzolla y Django Reinhardt entre otros. Músicos invitados aportan otras texturas, enriqueciendo el producto final: el legendario Ernesto Baffa (bandoneón), Pablo Agri (violín), Raúl Miño (acordeón), Néstor Basurto (guitarra y voz) y las voces de Daniel Melingo, Cristóbal Repetto, Martín Alvarado, y Rafael Rojas, en un memorable homenaje a Carlos Gardel. Si usted es de los que dicen “a mí no me gusta el tango”, ¿Trajiste la guitarra? puede ser una grata excepción para un género cuyo repertorio ha sido y sigue repitiéndose sin final aparente.
