An honest, hard hitting hip hop album easily leaving nerd-core rap fans in awe, pop fans slapping their thighs, and would-be gangsta rappers appreciating his honesty and skill, Second Chances has all bases covered. Raw lyricism-courtesy of his upbringing in Wellingtons cipher oriented hip hop scene-is displayed on the intro track More then Rhyme, and What it takes is a gritty, no frills translation of Percieve’s take on knocking heads in such a small industry. The album packs some heavyweight hitters (PNC, Ethical, FortyOne and Flowz) and Percieve holds his own alongside these veterans with ease.
Diverse both emotionally and musically, Second Chances is at once deeply introspective and bouncy as hell, dark and brooding while polished and loud. A few tracks down from the energetic Good to me and the listener arrives at a sobering account of Percieve coming to grips with being held accountable for taking a life in Excuse my tears. Second Chances simply put, is a journey through the life of an ordinary NZ youth, with an extraordinary talent for storytelling and music. He gives an insight into the darker side of the road, shows you through the smashed windows and into the struggles, then guides you to the bar with a Jim Beam and a pocket full of $5 notes, where you can’t help but raise a glass to this tightly produced, soul laden release appealing to Hip hop, R&B, Pop, and Rock fans alike.
This album was made with no financial assistance from a record label, it was mixed, engineered, recorded and arranged by Percieve, and at time of print, is entirely self distributed and serviced to radio. The two videos currently in rotation on Juice (Always be There and Excuse my Tears) were both made without the help of an NZ on AIR grant. The obvious work ethic that went into making the cd, coupled with the Calibre of guest artists ensure high expectations before the CD even leaves the case.
