Details:
Salley Lesley, a native of Columbia, SC, is a singer, songwriter, piano and acoustic guitar player. She writes mostly inspirational folk style songs that come from her heart. Her song, River of Love, was recently selected as a winner in the Musicians and Songwriters Guild of South Carolina Through The Eyes of Art Songwriters Competition. I’ll Stand By You…My Dear Friend is her first CD, released in November 2007.

The feature song on this album, “I’ll Stand By You…My Dear Friend”, was inspired by several close friends who have been struggling with cancer. Salley was also very touched by the effects of cancer while volunteering for several years at the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in her community. A cancer survivor herself, she hopes that her music will inspire and open hearts and that her first album will raise awareness and funds to donate to cancer research. For every CD sold, a contribution will be made.

Salley grew up playing piano, singing in the church youth choir, singing along with the piano, her ukulele and later a guitar in college. Her early adult life was spent focused on her family, a home business, and volunteer work until she felt called to go to graduate school in the late 80’s. Professionally, Salley is now a psychotherapist and trained spiritual director in private practice, work she finds very fulfilling. Now, with the added passion and time spent on her music, her life is busy, full and joyful. Her other favorite pastimes include spending time with her family and friends, praying, yoga and meditation, walking, reading, growing flowers and spending time at her mountain retreat near Asheville. Salley is married with three grown children and a son and daughter in law, all in Columbia.

One of her professional contributions has been facilitating support groups for women. She has led groups based on the book, The Artist’s Way, by Julia Cameron. These groups helped women focus on their creative gifts and potential, as well as uncovering the blocks they encountered. In the process, Salley rediscovered her longing to make music a more creative part of her life. She believes that we are all designed to be creative and that for her it is a spiritual call.

Nearly eight years ago, she bought a guitar and began studying guitar with Barrett Smith. She quickly began learning to play finger style picking from him and wrote her first song. From that point on, she has continued to play, learn new styles and sing and write more songs. Then her husband, Edwin, learned to play the banjo, and together they enjoy playing bluegrass music. They played with a bluegrass group, First Time in Public, for several years and still continue to play bluegrass music regularly.

Her husband has been her greatest supporter and gave her a gift certificate in 2006 to spend time in the recording studio of Sugar Recording. Little did he know that this would become an ongoing experience for Salley which would lead to her first recording project.

Salley has been influenced by other singer songwriters and has learned to play some of their music. Her favorites include Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin, Alison Krauss, Tuck and Patti, Paul Simon, Gillian Welch, Nanci Griffith and others. Her favorite singer is Eva Cassidy.

She gets support in her community by being active in two singer songwriter groups: The Musicians and Songwriters Guild of South Carolina and WriteNow SC.
