About the CD: ATMOS is a collection of soundscapes and ethereal textures. Most music is composed with the design to invoke a specific emotional or physical response. The pieces in ATMOS have been structured in an ambiguous way to allow the listener to call up their own responses. This makes ATMOS usable for listening in therapeutic environments, meditation, relaxation, massage and other calming or ambient situations.
ATMOS is a collection of pieces highlighting synthesis, natural sounds, natural instruments and ethereal type choirs. It is designed in a manner so as to not be drone-like and to provide a varied stimulus – ranging from Alpha wave generation to W. Carlos/Tomita/Vangelis type sonorities to natural sound incorporation.
The intent with ATMOS was to produce a recording conducive to calming and relaxation – yet remain musical and not be boring or cause one to want to go to sleep – rather to assist in promoting waking dream states,
About the artist: Hello – my name is Stephen McMahan. Tuwa Sni is one of the pseudonyms which I use in my recording work. I record in many genres and I use the pseudonyms to avoid confusion by those who might associate the name with the genre.
I am a classically trained musician and have worked/composed in orchestral, big band, jazz, electronic and many sub-genres of rock music. I have played saxes, bassoon, many different type of synths, bass, many types of guitars, and (for the past 16 years) 1st Nations’ Flute.
ATMOS is a rebirth of sorts for me in the electronic music realm – a place where I spent much time during the early 70’s. The new softsynths have matured to produce a wealth of new sounds, providing a wide sonic palette - and several were used in the making of ATMOS. I also have a profound fondness for natural sounds and for sound manipulation and sound design. I also have a special place for the older synthesis sounds and they too are represented in this collection.
