Christian Levis’ Kaleidoscope takes a new approach to dealing with the age-old transition into (or at least approaching) “adulthood.” This self-produced album was recorded over a yearlong period in the artist’s home studio and showcases not only his songwriting but also recording and production ability. The band on the album is composed mostly of studio musicians ranging from old friends like blues guitarist Rob Girladi and progressive jazz drummer Ian Carrol, to new additions like bassist Chris Anderson. The result is an eclectic mix of styles that makes for a very diverse album. Beginning with Could It Be, a jazz inspired song with a great pop chorus, Kaleidoscope moves through various genres from the bluesy, organ driven Happy Ending, to disco-inspired Is That All, and No Exceptions, a more progressive song in 7/8 inspired by King Crimsons’ Frame By Frame. With influences ranging from progressive rockers to pop songwriters and even Broadway show tunes, most noticeable on Longway, no song on Kaleidoscope sounds the same.
Try listening to the album strait through, as it was designed, and the interludes will change keys seamlessly, grouping songs that fit together into a larger collective piece. This song-cycle structure fits the title Kaleidoscope, as it moves the listener in and out of colors, emotions and styles on a journey to the end of the album.
