Details:
Deshawn tha Golden Child, was born Deshawn Tatem on September 3rd 1978 in Norfolk Va, Although born in Norfolk, Deshawn was raised in Chesapeake by his mother {Cynthia Tatem} and Grandmother {Irene Mcfee}. Obviously Deshawn was born albino, which is considered to be handicapped because of the lack of pigmentation that effects the eyes causing poor vision, resulting in him using his other senses to learn, mainly his hearing. Deshawn’s unique hearing ability became evident to his family when he heard his mother play a melody on his sister’s small organ and he played the melody near perfect, but do to his family’s financial situation no music lessons were provided. Regardless, Deshawn’s interest and natural ability continued to increase. Deshawn’s uncle Samuel Knockett was pastor of a small church, there was an organ but no organ player so pastor Knockett allowed Deshawn {8 years old at the time} to play around with it. Initially the sound was everything but pleasing, the amazing thing was the persistence in little Deshawn. Eventually some pleasing notes were produced, in fact he matured enough on the Hammond that he became the church’s official musician. Deshawn did not stop there, at the age of 10 he wrote his first song and performed it in front of his mother and siblings, it wasn’t a hit but the beginning. Deshawn was a black kid in the projects with no father and a family on welfare like everybody else, but he did not look like anyone else, in fact he looked white. This caused Deshawn to be ridiculed and rejected by his peers. He noticed the only time he was accepted was when he did something no one else could do. Deshawn decided to use his talents to fit in. To improve he studied artist like KRS ONE, Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Shirley Ceasar, Black Moon, Lauryn Hill etc… Deshawn was given the nickname Golden Child by his peers jokingly while playing in Broadlawn Park, because of a bad haircut Deshawn was forced to go bald, Deshawn being bald reminded his peers of the oriental boy in the Eddie Murphy Golden Child movie, the name stuck. At the age of 15 Gold became serious about his music. He started as a gangster rapper eventually he graduated to becoming the well rounded musician we know him to be today, singer/ rapper/ pianist/ producer. Through musical history this description only fits a few artists, however there is one thing about Gold that separates him from everyone. You mean his raspy tenor vocal tone? No, his narrative street lyrics? No, his euphonious melodies and rhythms? No, Gold has a passion to bring the way, truth, and the light to the HIP HOP culture through Jesus Christ, this in addition to all else mentioned separates him from everyone. For over 8 years Gold has been fighting the good fight, he admits it has been hard but also rewarding. Gold has been on stage with many national and international artists such as Sadat X[ Formerly of Brand Nubian}, Kurtis Blow, Tye Tribbett & G.A., Tha Truth, Crossmovement, Canton Jones, Tonex, to name a few. Deshawn has performed up and down the east coast region including New York, North Carolina, West Virginia, Maryland, and of Course Virginia. Gold has been featured in both magazines and newspapers, he has made television appearances on PAX 49 and CW{formerly UPN}. The Golden Child is the CEO of the independent label Yahshua Records. Deshawn tha Golden Child specializes in Neo Soul, R&B, and Hip Hop, most would argue that this special musician has no limit in his range of music.
