(vent) formed in the spring of 2005 in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania.
Anand, Anant, and Srikant became friends early in their college careers, but their musical interaction was initially limited to infrequent jam sessions and impromptu performances. They often discussed musical concepts and realized that although they held some common influences, their preferences and backgrounds were quite diverse.
Anand Anbalagan hails from Madison, Wisconsin. He played classical violin and sang in musical theater productions through school, but never played in a band or attempted original composition before college. During high school, he became very interested in computer science, sound engineering, and the physics of music. After being randomly paired with Anant as roommates for the freshman year of college, he began to try his hand at sound recording and engineering techniques. It was at this time that Anand became interested in experimental electronic expression and related topics. In addition to producing and engineering for (vent), Anand also plays keyboards, synths, sequencers, and sings background vocals.
Anant Nyshadham hails from West Point, Georgia. Early on, Anant was heavily influenced by blues and southern rock. He co-founded an experimental rock band in high school called Zephyrus Jones, with whom he recorded his first record. Zephyrus Jones ultimately disbanded in 2003 and Anant left for Penn. Upon arriving in Philadelphia, Anant’s musical interests turned towards experimental jazz and contemporary classical, which he studied for his first two years at Penn. The inception of (vent) marks Anant’s return to experimental pop rock and evidences his attempt to fold these influences into his own music. Anant plays rhythm guitar, bass guitar, and keys for the group.
In the spring of 2004, Anant and Srikant met to record the improvisation of a South Indian classical piece, Samajavaragamana in raagam Hindolum. Anand Anbalagan was present. It was fun.
Srikant Rao hails from Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. At the age of 5, he began training in the art of Carnatic (South Indian) classical music. Both of his parents were very passionate about the style and encouraged him throughout the natural fickleness of adolescence to continue his study. He also got involved with western music through school choirs and musical theater productions beginning in elementary school. In high school, his major influence was R&B, which allowed him to bring a completely unique perspective to the group. Early in his college career, Srikant found an outlet for his passion for music in Penn Masala, the world’s first and premier Hindi a cappella group.
Srikant was chosen to be Masala’s music director. This allowed him to develop his musical intuition and confidence as a composer. He also had the opportunity to lead the recording and production of the group’s latest album. Anand Anbalagan is also in this group. It is fun. Srikant now sings lead vocals for (vent).
On a sunny afternoon in the spring of 2005, Anand, Anant, and Srikant were sitting around the apartment jamming. Anant was playing around in a Mode of D Major when Srikant was reminded of his favorite Carnatic piece, Nannu Kanna Thalli by the famous composer Sri Thyagaraja. Srikant urged Anant to continue playing the chords while he sang the rest of the song. (vent)’s rendition of Nannu Kanna Thalli was born. Anand immediately decided that they should record the song. Due to their excitement about the outcome of this track, the group decided to record 11 more tracks over the summer of 2005 at Srikant’s house in Blue Bell. (vent) played a few gigs over the Fall of 2005 and continued to write new material.
Throughout this time, the group was searching for a percussionist. This search came to a fortuitous close when they found a talented, bushy tailed freshman named Romit Bhattacharya.
Romit Bhattacharya hails from Irvington, New York. He is trained in North Indian (Hindustani) classical percussion, plays the tabla, and jazz drum kit. Romit has always been passionate about music and in high school he began to explore his interests. He undertook several musical projects including fusion concepts with a close friend and sax player. He gigged in the New York City area for several years before leaving for college. Upon arriving at Penn, Romit joined an Indian Classical performance group called Penn Sargam. The group serves as a forum for North Indian classical music and South Indian classical music, as well as fusion between the genres. He now plays tabla, kit, and percussion for the group.
All the while, loitering and loafing and licking his paws, the Earl of Essex was invaluably contributing his voice and melodic intuition to the mix. He sealed his position as an inextricable portion of the (vent) collective''s sound with his backing vocals on their first track Nannu Kanna Thalli.
Jay Arun Patel, affectionately known as the Earl of Essex, has spent half of his life in London, England and the other half in Allentown, Pennsylvania. As a result of the strong influences of the vibrant Indian community he grew up in, Jay was exposed to many cultures. Naturally, he listened to a wide variety of artists from the UK, US and India and enjoyed singing along with his favorite artists simply as a hobby. However, it was when he met Anant, Anand, and Srikant that he truly discovered his passion for music and performing. Jay joined Penn Masala his freshman year and went on to serve as president of the group for two years. Other than being a great outlet to perform and strengthen his vocal skills, his involvement with PM was instrumental in sparking an interest in the legal and business aspects of the entertainment industry. With this newfound passion and confidence, Jay joined the (vent) collective as a backup vocalist in March 2006 just in time to provide input for the Typical EP. He is now having the time of his life.
(vent) returned to the studio in March of 2006 with their newest member, Romit; longtime friend and genius collaborator, Jay Patel, on backing vocals; and their latest material to professionally record the group’s first EP entitled Typical. It was fun.
