The Musicians

Paul Evenden:
Paul has spent most of his life playing music of one type or another. Growing up in a musical family saw him learning piano at an early age and playing brass instruments during his high school years in Hamilton, Ont. After finishing a music degree he moved to Vancouver in 1979 where he discovered Irish music, first playing guitar, then adding Whistle and Bodhran to an increasing variety of instruments. There were many years playing in the sessions around Vancouver before taking a break from the pub scene and changing the musical focus slightly. Paul sang with The Vancouver Chorale for many years, sang with the Amabilis singers and Co-directed a children''s choir, The Westcoast Youth Ensemble, with Mya, his wife.

Having ''rediscovered'' Irish music in 1999, he has played with a traditional Irish band, Small Potatoes, with Danny Burns and the Ballad Band, and was featured on stage at Culpepper''s Restaurant in Vancouver on occasion. He is now starting out with his own group "Copper Sky", playing Irish music around Vancouver.

Mary Brunner:
Mary was born in Vancouver in 1951. As a premature baby, (under three pounds) she lived in an incubator for nearly two months. As a result, she lost her eyesight due to an overabundance of oxygen, which destroyed both retinas. She then attended the Jericho Hill School for the Blind, and graduated from high school in 1969.

Mary''s first introduction to music was learning to sing some of her father''s favourite German folk songs as a young child. At the age of five, she began piano lessons. However, when she was introduced to the violin by a neighbour at the age of nine, she discovered she enjoyed the violin much more than the piano. Therefore, she began studying classical music and eventually obtained a Performance Degree in violin through the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Mary continued her studies at the Academy of Music in Vancouver for about five years. Unfortunately, due to the untimely death of her teacher, she lost interest and musical direction for a time.

Within a year after leaving the Academy, Mary was introduced to folk music by a friend, John Lyon, an excellent folk singer in his own right, and gained a measure of confidence through performing together over the next several years

For the past seven years Mary has been performing regularly around Vancouver, BC. She currently plays in several Irish Celtic bands around Vancouver, including "Copper Sky" with Paul Evenden.

Llewellyn Adam
Llew is a Vancouver native who studied harp and piano at Trinity College in London, England. She returned to Canada and played with the Vancouver Symphony and CBC Orchestras from the late 1950''s to the early 1970''s. Llew has been very active in the music ministry of the Catholic Church in Vancouver and often plays for weddings, funerals and special services. She has performed on cruise ships and currently can be seen performing many casual engagements in the Greater Vancouver area.

Neil Heustis
Neil Huestis grew up in a musical Maritimes family. His grandfather played fiddle in the logging camps in the early 1900''s. His grandmother taught organ. Neil''s mother played piano and his father played pipes. Neil doodled around for years on a number of different instruments, earned a music degree in Nova Scotia, and occasionally entertained people with pleasant tunes. The flute has been Neil''s preferred instrument for many years and the one with which he has inflicted the least amount of pain on others. He hopes to teach his two kids his grandfather''s tunes when they are old enough.
