About Bill

Bill Lauter is a distinctive voice in Long Island Music. First there is his voice - a warm, rich baritone with amazing range. Then there are the several guitars he plays, changing over the years and each richly complementing his voice.

Equally entrancing is Bill’s repertoire - songs and guitar instrumentals from folk and popular traditions. Many of the songs from these different genres have a rich history, mainly because of their folk roots. The music Bill selects for each performance is tasteful and evocative.

Along with his affinity for traditional folk music, Bill has a way of reinventing more recently popular songs such as “Autumn Leaves”

With Bill’s highly refined guitar technique, you would think he would like to show it of at every turn, as with “In The Bleak Midwinter”, but his A cappella rendition of “Wade In The Water” leaves nothing in the way of the pure sound of his voice.

Many well know artists, including Bessie Smith, have recorded “Nobody Knows You When Your Down And Out”. Bill’s version compares well to all of them.

Bill has also extensively studied the history and construction of steel stringed acoustic guitars and has written several articles on the subject.
