MP3 Exit 8 - Penny Waits

Inspired by freedom, double-takes and the cries of city life, Exit 8 takes its name from the hard-driving, rock-infused melodies their music evokes with a sound ranging from Jimmy Eat World to a toned down Foo Fighters.

3 MP3 Songs
ROCK: 80''s Rock, POP: Power Pop

Details:
The first track from the Exit 8 latest demo ''Penny Waits'' starts off with a driving bass line followed by layered guitars and hard-hitting drums. The sound swells and eventually fades back to an open verse where an empathetic vocal tells a sad story about a girl who long ago stopped believing in herself. By the time the crunch-filled chorus guitars enter the scene our character ''Penny Waits'' is contemplating ending it all. With only a glimmer of hope that she will find the strength to start believing, Penny Waits not only becomes our heroine but a damn good song as well.

The Sound...

Exit 8''s sound has evolved from power ballads to power rock. If you listen to the progression of the three EP''s, you''ll notice two things: they''re recording one demo per year, and the songs rock much harder. "Playing with Duke and Rich has elevated my songwriting to a whole new level" notes Mark. "They bring a big rock sound to the table and great ideas. It''s been exciting and challenging working on incorporating their playing style with my pop sensibilities. I''ve always said I''m a sucker for a good hook and I know they are too. Now we''re just delivering it in a new package. Hey, maybe in another year we''ll be writing death metal tunes for rebellious Britney Spears fans."

The Story...

It was mid 2002 when singer/songwriter Mark Stancato started working on a three song demo with music veteran and producer Godfrey Diamond (Aerosmith, Lou Reed). After sifting through twelve songs of rainy days, lost love, and more lost love it was clear that Mark''s first professionally produced demo was going to be ballad centered. "Up to that point most of my experience as a musician and songwriter was based around an acoustic guitar. I was drawn to the natural rich tones of the acoustic, a sad story, and a coffee-house setting. It was just a matter of time before I realized I needed other players and a Marshall half-stack to fill out the sound in a live setting."

In This Corner...

Responding to an ad posted at one of NYC''s rehearsal studios, Duke called and introduced himself as a lead guitar player. "By the time Duke responded I think we auditioned four guitarists. I was getting a bit concerned ''cause no one felt right." Mark sent the rough tracks to Duke and three days later they were rehearsing the songs and coming up with new ideas. "Duke came into rehearsal with the songs down cold. After playing one tune I felt like he was the one. He had an ear for melody, great rhythm, and business cards to boot"

Finding a bass player didn''t take too long. Duke quickly called on his long-time friend and bassist Richard Abbondante to drop in for an audition. "I knew Rich could play this kind of music very well" noted Duke. "He just seemed right." Rich showed up with a bottle of Vicodin, a broken jaw, and a Fender Bass. A high stick to the face, the night before, in a hockey game didn''t prevent him from making the audition and landing the gig. As Rich concluded later "Thank God for Vicodin and red wine."

Taking its cue from a Spinal Tap movie Exit 8 has been through a few drummers, however they didn''t spontaneously self-combust. "It was just a matter of different styles when it came to our first drummer" explains Mark. "He was a good player but not really a good fit." The second drummer, Ronen, who played on the band''s second EP was a very good rock drummer, however eventually moved back to Israel. Exit 8''s current drummer, Darcy Macrae, bested the competition when he auditioned for the band in mid 2004. "Darcy came in, hit hard, knew the tunes, and got the job."
