Urban Songs is the debut EP by Aucklandn New Zealand Singer/Songwriter, Andrew Healey. Healey recorded, produced and played most of the instruments on this 6-track CD, with a little help from several collaborators at Glass Onion Studios in Mt Wellington, Auckland.
Many will recognize Healey from his numerous solo appearances over the years at popular Auckland venues. His intense performances, expressive voice and melodic, well structured songs set him apart from others in Auckland’s music scene.
Though Urban Songs is his first solo recording, Healey first appeared on the 2006 compilation album, On the Horizon: a Songwriters’ Collection, with an acoustic performance of ‘Little King’ – a song about the relationship between father and son. New Zealand Musician Magazine singled out this song, describing it as ‘moving.’ A rearranged version of ‘Little King’ appears on Urban Songs, along with five other pop gems, like the caustic ‘Sick Love,’ the frenetic ‘Stand,’ and the beautifully uncomplicated ‘Sailing.’
Look out for Healey over the coming months as he hits the road accompanied by a number of musical friends. Urban Songs is just a taste of things to come; he has dozens of songs in his repertoire and plans to release a full length album in 2008 – watch this space.

His music is elegant, simplistic in form, and relies on the surprisingly deep character of Andrew Healey''s voice to merge with lyrics that are reminiscent of a carefully-constructed, personal diary. He can dole out a poetic tune such as "Litle King" on one track then hop to harder edged offerings such as the piece "Sick Love" and "Stand."
He is one of those artists that people hear and comment how good his sound is, both in voice and instrumentation. "Urban Songs" consists of the bare essentials that lead to more than the sum of their parts.
One could say that he has traveled many miles in the voyage of life. It is to his credit and our fortune that he has transformed this trip into the product "Urban Songs". This release is one that I am prepared to spend a lot of time with and so should you. If you appreciate an artist with talent and enjoy relaxing music, Andrew Healey''s "Urban Songs" is an unquestionably a smart buy.
An excellent business card for a musician destined for something larger. Watch out for this one….
