Details:
A year in a mental hospital…
A night in jail…
A disdain for santa claus…
A name that is constantly mispronounced and butchered…
A desire to screw up less…
These elements provide some of the inspiration for Shawnessey Cargile’s music.
In 1996, at a small school in Calhoun, Georgia, Shawnessey helped form the acoustic rock group, Red Letter, with fellow classmates Will Graybeal and Richard Shinn. The band would last for two years, write ten songs, and play at least five shows…total…for crowds ranging from 5 to 50. Though this project wasn’t a huge “success”, it did provide the inspiration for Shawnessey to eventually teach himself to play the guitar.
For the next nine years, Shawnessey’s new found “talent” led him to write and perform 1 original song. Realizing that his “talent” was not progressing as quickly as he once imagined, Shawnessey began to focus more energy and time to the songs that had floated in and out of his head over the years. During the summer of 2005, he confined himself to a friend’s makeshift recording studio(generous term) and wrote and recorded nearly 30 songs. Two of those songs, “don’t know” and “too busy”, appear on his 2008 debut CD, “if I use the knowledge i have…”. There is also one track, “susanna’s song”, from Shawnessey’s time with Red Letter.
Currently, Shawnessey resides in Chattanooga, TN and can be found performing with his sister, Elizabeth Cargile, or with “The Jim Smither’s Band”, which was formed with Stuart King in 2005. “the best i ever had today” and “eve of Christmas” are two songs of “The Jim Smither’s Band” that are found on Shawnessey’s debut CD, “if i use the knowledge I have…”.
Sometimes, Shawnessey can be found performing under the moniker, Jim Smithers.
