LATIN: General, WORLD: Andean Folk

Details:
SURCARI derives its name by combining sur, the Spanish word for south (as in Suramérica), and Cari, the first four letters of the word Caribbean. The members of SURCARI are originally from Chile and Puerto Rico.

This CD consists of original compositions as well as sparkling arrangements of traditional and contemporary Latin American, Andean, Afro-Caribbean, Spanish, and world music fused with the sounds of the classical guitar, Andean panpipes, and Latin percussion. SURCARI performs on over thirty wind, string, and percussion instruments.

1. BOMBA CANDOMBE © 2006 ASCAP
(Drum Dance) Bomba / Candombe
Comp. & Arr. Lorena Garay

In this original composition, two rhythms of African origin are blended: bomba (meaning “drum”) from Puerto Rico and candombe (meaning “dance”) from Uruguay. The lyrics of this song pay tribute to the culture, music, and traditions that the Caribbean and South America inherited from Africa.

2. NEO SIKURIADA © 2006 ASCAP
(Modern Music for Sikuri) Sikuriada
Comp. & Arr. Lorena Garay

This original composition is a modern version of a traditional sikuriada. It incorporates rich harmonies with the classical guitar and embellished melodies with the panpipes. This sikuriada features the zampoñas pareadas, with two panpipe players alternating notes to form the melody.

3. CANTO AL SOL © 2006 ASCAP
(Chant to the Sun) Tonada
Comp. & Arr. Lorena Garay

This original composition is dedicated to Inti, the Incan Sun God. The nostalgic chant evokes the work songs of laborers engaged in physical and often repetitive tasks, such as farming. The toyo (the largest panpipe), the quena and the quenacho (Andean flutes) are featured in this composition.

4. GUERRA O PAZ © 2006 ASCAP
(War or Peace) Landó
Comp. & Arr. Lorena Garay

This original composition is a protest song against war and capitalism. It talks about the uncertainty that we live with nowadays, when our national leaders preach about peace, but promote war. This song is set to a Landó, a Peruvian dance with Angolan origins, combined with Afro-Caribbean influences.

5. NAYMLAP
(Naymlap) Andean
Comp. Mauricio Vicencio, Arr. Lorena Garay

This instrumental piece was inspired by a Peruvian legend. The piece features the Andean panpipe, a wind instrument made of Andean bamboo. This arrangement is embellished by an additional part for classical guitar and by accompanying melodies played by other panpipes.

6. SELVA CELTA © 2006 ASCAP
(Celtic Jungle) Andean / Celtic
Comp. & Arr. Lorena Garay / Eugenio Huanca

This original composition is set in the heart of the Amazon. The music recreates the sounds of the tropical rainforest. The classical guitar, the charango, and the Andean panpipe replace the traditional Celtic instruments.
NOTE: The nature sounds in this composition were created by SURCARI in the studio, without sampling.

7. ESTOY AL REVÉS © 2006 ASCAP
(I’m Upside Down) Latin Fussion
Comp. & Arr. Lorena Garay

This original composition is a playful and humorous tune about a disagreement between a mother and her son. The son is desperately in love with a beautiful girl, but the mother disapproves and tells her son to break off the relationship. She warns him that he must behave or she will pull his ear and turn him upside down.
